Angry, Shirtless Man Fires Shots at Stranger: Police

Francisco Perez decided to chase the victim after he apparently took offense at how the man looked at him, Joliet police said.

A shirtless man who apparently did not like the look a passerby gave him tore off down an alley after him and fired at least three shots in his direction, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

The victim was not hurt in the 10:30 p.m. Monday attack and told police he didn't know what provoked Francisco Perez, 33, of 220 Mound, Joliet, to pursue him, he said.

"(The victim) observed Perez holding a gun in his hand, and Perez asked him if he had a problem," Roechner said.

Perez then decided to chase the victim, firing several shots in his direction, according to reports. Three spent shell casings were recovered near the area of 2nd Avenue and Sherman Street.

Perez was later identified by the victim and arrested on charges of felony aggravated discharge of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition, a misdemeanor.

Roechner said Perez refused to talk to police so they don't know what motivated the attack on the victim, whom he apparently did not know. It's also not known why Perez would have been in his yard with his shirt off holding a gun, he said.

Perez is being held in the Will County jail; bond information was not available Tuesday night. According to Joliet records, Perez was previously arrested on a driving under the influence of alcohol charge in January 2011.
