Alleged Joliet Gunman Badly Beaten by the Man He Tried to Rob, Police Say

Antonio Holmes was surprised when the man he was trying to hold up opted to keep his cash and attacked him instead, Cmdr. Rich Demick said.

The tables were turned on a man who brandished a gun and demanded money from a stranger, only to have the victim knock the weapon from his hand and proceed to beat him.

say Antonio Yarnell Holmes, 29, 317 Grover St., initially knocked on a door in Evergreen Terrace, an apartment complex at Broadway and Bluff streets, at about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday and told a would-be victim to give him money. When a second person in the apartment called out that they'd just called the police, Holmes fled, police Cmdr. Rich Demick said.

Less than 10 minutes later, Holmes was in the 300 block of Bluff street and confronting another man about giving him cash, Demick said. Holmes reportedly pulled on a ski mask, pulled out the gun and said, "Give me all you got."

The victim, perhaps suspecting the gun was a fake because Holmes kept repeatedly cocking it, knocked the gun away, pushed Holmes to the ground and started beating him, Demick said. A second man joined in the attack, he said, before police arrived break up the fight.

"I suspect Holmes was probably never happier to see the police in his life," Demick said.
