2 Joliet Residents Killed, 1 Critically Injured in Route 52 Crash

Icy road conditions are thought to have caused the driver to lose control of her car and collide with an oncoming vehicle, Illinois State Police said.

Two Joliet residents were killed and a third critically injured when their vehicle went out of control Saturday afternoon on an icy Route 52 near Manhattan and collided with another car, according to Illinois State Police District 5.

The victims are driver Keyshanna Lucas, 20, and front-seat passenger Sharquece Baker, 16, Sgt. Scott Angus said. Baker was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m. at the scene of the accident and Lucas was pronounced dead at 2:38 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

The back-seat passenger, a 19-year-old man from Joliet, is in critical condition at Silver Cross, Angus said.

The three were traveling southbound on Route 52, near South Ceder Road, at about 1:15 p.m. when Lucas lost control of her vehicle and swerved into the path of a car headed northbound on Route 52, he said.

The husband and wife in the second vehicle were not injured, he said.

At this point, the collision appears to be weather-related but it remains under investigation by the state police, Angus said.
