Community Corner

What is it like to have your home taken from you?

Some of you who lived in Joliet I the 60's, when they built I-80; and in the 80's when the Will county Detention Center was built, may remember some of the events.

Some of you may remember your parents trying to hold on to their homes, their property that they had bought and paid for.

I remember my Aunt who stayed on what was then DeKalb Street.  My Uncle built that house for her and she had been living there for 35 years when she was forced to move.

When they built that jail they also destroyed a lot of community businesses as well as the community.

Do any of you remember?

And I-80, well they just wiped out a community that flourished with fruit trees as well as people.

Yep, there were a lot of tears then. At least though, they did get compensated for their property.  Some even got more than the property was worth--minus the memories.

But most got a lot less than the property was worth. Some of you remember how your parents felt--some of you even remember how you felt when you had to leave the community that you had known all your life.

Well just think how the Palestinians feel when they have their land taken from them--and they get no compensation.
