On Saturday morning, a group of walkers will gather at the Channahon State Park Trailhead on the I&M Canal Trail. They will be walking to remember those who have gone before them and those whose memories have failed.
The third annual Journey in Motion begins with registration and refreshments at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m.
In 2010, a group from Leeza's Place at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center climbed Mt. Washington in New Hampshire to raise awareness and funds. After that event, Kathy Miller and Kim Jackson, both Leeza's Place Program & Outreach Directors, decided to do something every year to commemorate the people cared for by the caregivers the organization serves.
Leeza's Place is a non-profit organization that supports caregivers of those with Alzheimer's, Dementia and Traumatic Brain injury, as well as other memory issues.
The path this year begins at the trailhead and continues through McKinley Woods. The path is about 6 miles round trip.
Registration is $20 and all registered walkers will receive a backpack/sling.
When the organization climbed Mt. Washington, they brought a memory quilt inscribed with loved ones and well wishes. This walk features the ability to purchase a river rock for $1 donation to Leeza's Place. They can be purchased before the walk or on the day of the event. Participants can then inscribe it with a special message in memory or in honor of someone.
The rocks will be distributed along the trail symbolizing the foundation that our loved ones have built so we can continue the journey for them.
