Joliet Central Choirs Excel in New York Competition

The students of the Joliet Central High School Vocal Music program have much to be proud of after a very eventful Spring Break. Five choir groups traveled with their director to New York City for the Big Apple New York Choir Competition at Staten Island College in Staten Island on March 29.

The Concert Choir, Show Choir, and New Era Choir took first place gold in their divisions, the Steeltones took second place silver in their division, and the Chamber Choir took first place gold and were named the Grand Champions in their competition. In addition, Jared Ellis was named the best male soloist and Zariya Butler was named best female soloist.

“I am so proud of these students and their success in such a prestigious competition,” said vocal music director David L. Jones.

Chaperons and staff that went on the trip had just as much fun as the students did exploring a new city and representing their school in competition.

“I was so glad to be a part of the trip to New York and share the experience with the students. There is so much talent at our school, the students’ maturity and respect they showed on this trip made me proud to be a teacher at Central,” said teacher Richard Goberville.

The next event for the vocal music programs is the Show Choir Extravaganza on Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. in the Joliet Central auditorium, 201. E. Jefferson Street in Joliet.
