Acne Treatment 101: What You Need to Know

Hello! For this post, I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Paula K. Lapinski, M.D. weigh in on some basic acne treatment information. As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Lapinski has helped many Illinois patients who want to improve their skin. For many people, clearing up acne is first on the list of things they would like to improve about their skin and I think this post is a great way to start that discussion about a great skin-care regiment.

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. That probably doesn't come as a surprise, as most of us started getting pimples as teenagers. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, nearly 85% of all Americans suffer from acne at some point in their lives. Acne treatment is also one of the most common reasons people see a dermatologist. Our practice near Naperville, Illinois, offers a range of products designed for use at home.

When acne or acne scars require medical treatment from a board-certified dermatologist, a treatment regimen is created to address your specific needs, which can combine specific products with medical procedures. These include:

  • Over-the-counter topical treatments, a good choice for mild to moderate acne
  • Prescription topical treatments, such as Retin-A, that work by promoting cell turnover and preventing plugging of hair follicles
  • Topical and oral antibiotics, which are typically prescribed for moderate to severe acne and tapered once symptoms begin improving
  • Isotretinoin is reserved for treating cystic acne or acne that doesn't respond to other treatments
  • Oral contraceptives, which can control hormonal fluctuations associated with acne flareups
  • Chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser therapy to treat both acne and acne scars
