How to Mow Your Lawn the Right Way

Sure, it's a simple as getting a mower and cutting, but there is more than that to consider.

As the weather begins to heat up and on the heels of the rains we have had in the last couple weeks, you and your neighbors are probably all heading out on the weekend to crank up the lawnmower. Even if you have been mowing the lawn for decades, you can probably be reminded of safety considerations and tips for just how short you should be cutting.

Turns out not all lawns should be cut the same. Kentucky bluegrass, for example, should be cut to 1.5 to 2.5 inches, while Bentgrass should be at  0.25 to 0.75 inches. You can find more information on lengths for particular grasses by clicking here.

In addition to knowing how short to cut your lawn, you should always keep in mind what you should do to stay safe while mowing. No matter whether your mower is powered by gas or is electric or is not powered at all, the lawn is being cut by blades and you should take care to be as safe as possible. Tips here were taken from How Stuff Works. You can visit the Web site by clicking here. They were also taken from Wikihow.

  1. Wear the right gear. This means closed-toed shoes, long pants and eye protection.
  2. Remove debris before you begin. Pick up all sticks, toys and rocks. If you have an animal, pick up the excrement before beginning.
  3. Mow in different directions. Although there is some debate about this, including the approach to cut the lawn in a spiral pattern, experts say the differing directions is good for the lawn.
  4. Wear golf shoes. This will mean you aerate your lawn while mowing.
  5. Mow across hills and not up and down.
