Program Offers Housing Discounts for Joliet 'Heroes'

Public servants can get discounts on closing costs, lender fees under "Homes for Heroes."

A nationwide program is now available in Joliet, offering discounts on home purchases and refinancing for military families, police, firefighters, teachers and healthcare workers.

Launched after 9-11, Homes for Heroes originally focused on police and firefighters. Now, it's expanded to include EMTs, teachers, veterans, active-duty servicemen and women and healthcare workers, according to Susie Scheuber, a broker with Coldwell Banker.

As Joliet Homes for Heroes affiliates, Scheuber and W.J. Bradley branch sales manager Janine Iuliano donate 25 percent of their gross commission toward closing costs for local heroes who are purchasing a home.

Qualifying homebuyers are also eligible for lender fee discounts as part of the program, which recently launched in Joliet.

"It's a nice savings to them," said Scheuber, who is working to spread the word about the program.

To take advantage of Homes for Heroes, applicants must contact an affiliate of the program. In Joliet, qualifying "heroes" can contact Scheuber or Iuliano:
