Six Ways to Help Joliet Families This Christmas

Each of these groups has a program in which volunteers can adopt a family, buy a gift or sponsor a purchase for someone in need this holiday season.

Quickly, here are six groups that provide ways to help families in need this Christmas season.

Catholic Charities' Gift of Christmas Program. Adopt a family and provide Christmas gifts and other needed items. Most recipients are single mothers and the elderly living on restricted budgets. Contact Margaret at 815-724-1140.

MorningStar Mission's Book of Hope. They provide an online "catalog" of things you can buy to help homeless people or needy families. Some "gifts" are small -- $7.99 for a duffel bag and $10 for a pair of socks -- and others are larger, such as $60 for a counseling session and $29.95 for a holiday food basket.

Holiday Help for Families of Will and Grundy Counties. This Facebook site connects people who want to provide Christmas gifts and food for a family with people who are in need. You message organizer Mike Parker and he finds a family you can help. Email questions to ILHOLIDAYHELPERS@AOL.COM.

St. Mary Immaculate Church Giving Tree. Provide a single gift or adopt an entire family. Gifts are coordinated through organizations that include Daybreak, Guardian Angel Home, Rosewood and Lakewood nursing homes and Interfaith Food Pantry of Plainfield. Contact Nancy Sinclair at 815-577-5309 or nsinclair7@gmail.com.

St. John Lutheran Church is working with the Salvation Army's Angel Tree and has its own Giving Tree as well. Click here to get the details.

Greater Joliet Area YMCA has a giving tree set up in its lobby at the Galowich Y, 749 Houbolt Road. Choose an ornament and fulfill a Christmas wish.

If your group has an adopt-a-family or giving tree program that needs help, feel free to include information on it in the comment box below.
