MILWAUKEE – Michelle Piepenburg led four Wolves in double figures with a game-high 17 points as 25th-ranked Cardinal Stritch University defeated the University of St. Francis 71-52 in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening. | Box Score
Sparked by 10 points from Piepenburg and seven from Julie Raeder, Cardinal Stritch (25-6) built a 30-22 edge at the intermission. The Wolves held the advantage throughout the opening stanza, leading by as many as eight points on five different occasions.
Cardinal Stritch took its first double-digit lead of the night, 32-22, on a Piepenburg jumper in the opening minute of the second half. USF answered with back-to-back baskets to trim the deficit to six, 32-26, at the 17:57 mark, but the Wolves scored the game's next eight points to take their largest lead of the night to that point, 40-26, with 15:56 left in the contest.
The Wolves maintained a double-digit gap for most of the next six minutes until freshman Khadija Cooley's (Joliet, Ill./ Joliet West) three-pointer pulled the Saints to within seven, 48-41, at the 9:11 mark. Cardinal Stritch then put the game out of reach when it went on an 11-0 run to increase its lead to 59-41 with 5:05 to play.
Becky Gilbreath (14 points), Emily Neitzel (13) and Raeder (12) joined Piepenburg in double digits as Cardinal Stritch won for the 14th time in 15 home games.
Sophomore Katie Gonnering (Seymour, Wis./ Freedom) paced the Saints with 14 points, while senior Marissa Draper (Joliet, Ill./ Joliet Township) tallied 12.
USF finished the season with a 14-17 overall record under first-year head coach Samantha Quigley.
