Woman Beaten Throughout Night in Evergreen Terrace Apartment: Cops

A man allegedly kicked down his ex-girlfriend's Evergreen Terrace apartment door and battered her throughout a night.

A 19-year-old woman survived a night of brutality at the hands of her ex-boyfriend after he kicked down the door of her Evergreen Terrace apartment, police said.

Officers apprehended the woman's alleged attacker the next day as he was standing around outside the near west side apartment complex where they both live.

Mark Patton, 21, of 358 N. Broadway was charged with home invasion and domestic battery in connection with the alleged 7:30 p.m. Tuesday attack.

Patton's former girlfriend reportedly told police that after Patton kicked down her door, he proceeded to punch her about the face and body. He then kept her captive throughout the night and continued to hit her, police said. He also allegedly threatened to kill her.

At some point, a neighbor heard the young woman plead, "Stop hitting me," police said, and he called the police. Patton reportedly learned the law was on its way and he took off from the apartment.

After arriving at the apartment, officers reportedly saw bumps, bruises and scratches on the woman's body. The woman told officers Patton had beaten her five or six times in the past, but that she did not call the police because she was afraid he would kill her, said Chief Mike Trafton.

The next morning, the woman called the police and told them Patton was around. He was taken into custody near the corner of Broadway and Spring Street and was transported to the county jail.

So can anyone tell me why we are wasting tax payer money to keep these crime ridden apartments in Joliet?

Crime is everywhere. The deception is report only what happens over in those areas. What about the man on the far west side that beats his wife, sexually abuses his child. Let's keep that quiet because we have a reputation to keep up over here.

This fellow is costing the society a lot. Isn't he?? tax payer housing, taxpayer education, taxpayer jail, and very likely a lifelong emotionally and physically injured victim.

Where exactly do you think these people are going to spread out to?...you remove the buildings then you spread out the people living in it..Guess where the gang members are going to go? Rit into your neighborhoods...and fight, shoot out with other rival gang members...it's containment in one way...

They're still human beings. They may not be as well off as you. They may not be your favorite color. They may not be good citizens but they still are citizens of Joliet and as such have every bit as much rright as you to police protection, an ambulance and medical care. Let's hope that if it was you being beat that your fellow citizens would be "concerned"?

Where was COLOR ever mentioned in his comment? You jump to conclusions as fast as those "citizens of Joliet" jump on each other.

Well with the states attorney's torture law which was amended to the aggravated battery charge he should get the torture charge but does not say anything about it.The torture law should of been amended to the domestic aggravated battery.

If he held her and beat her all night where were the neighbors when he kicked down the door? People are afraid but until they stick up for neighbors and take the risk nothing will change. We need to stick together and stand up for each other, especially in bad neighborhoods. I know it isn't easy.

I agree with Concerned. Get people jobs. Don't force them into torture chambers we call "public housing."

Amen! Too much free public housing, too many free benefits, for way too long. Some people are getting too comfortable. I was too on welfare when I first came to this country from Europe, but after a couple of years my family and I got on our feet, got education, and got jobs. Now we are fully contributing members of the society and are not looking back for any handouts. Welfare is great, but should be limited to something like 2 years concurrent and 6 year lifetime total. This way people will get help, but not abuse the system. Thoughts?

Jobs do not prevent domestic violence, and having been a victim at one time and neither living in public housing nor receiving welfare, I fail to see the correlation you've tried to so neatly draw. And, I'm white. And, my ex had a very good job; so good, in fact, that no one believed me when I tried to tell them what was going on. Recently, he shot and killed his new girlfriend and then himself. So, explain to me again how the job makes the man?

This seems to be a pattern of emotion for some people. What a tough guy beating up on a girl. He sure showed her who is the boss. I guess a few years in jail or prison would help develop his GED educaton.

It does not matter if you are rich or poor, black or white, domestic violence does not discriminate. Let's all hope this piece of crap gets a lengthy stay in jail where he belongs.

Something else which startles me is the age of these young adults. He has jumped on her several times and she is in fear of her life (age 19) and has never reported it. He seems as though he is a product of his environment (age 21) and needs to be taught an alternative lifestyle. The gall to stand around as if nothing happened when the police were called, he deserves a long lock up.

The trouble in these projects are the unauthorized visitors living with friends and relatives. Like this "man" - If the project housing was used as it was intended for the women, children, handicapped and elderly there wouldn't be all this crime. If residents were evicted for this violation they might think twice about allowing boy friends, brothers, cousins etc to move in. This disastor needs to be shutdown and cleaned out.

I 1000% AGREE WITH U I'M 24 YRS OLD N I WOULD B DAMN IF I WAS BLESSED WITH THE ADVANTAGE TO GET UP ON MY FEET AND LET PEOPLE COME N STAY WITH ME IT'S FOR ME N MY CHILD NOT ME, MY CHILD, BABYDADDY, HIS FRIENDS AND THEY FRIENDS, FRIENDS IT'S 2 MUCH STUPID THINGS GOING ON WOMEN NEED 2 START LEARNING WHEN N HOW 2 SAY NO N KEEP IT MOVING. I PERSONALY THINK THAT IF A "MAN" CARE N "LOVE" U THAT MUCH THAN LOW INCOME IS A PLACE THAT U WOULD NOT B. HE WOULD DO WHAT EVER BY ALL MEANS, 2 TAKE CARE OF HIS FAMILY SO U WOULD'NT HAVE 2 DEPEND ON TAXPAYERS MONEY.. N LET HIM LAY UP FREE OF WORRIES

He should be charged with attempted murder inasmuch as he threatened to kill his girlfriend that night. Domestic violence occurs too often to look the other way. People can't look the other way when they become aware of what's going on. Maybe this thug will learn what it's like to be beaten while he sits in jail or prison and eventually change his brutish ways.

Lets tear down the public housing and kick these people while they are down. Its easy for you to say. Easy for you to want to limit welfare, but unless you have seen what goes on in the streets first hand educate yourself. I have been on and gotten myself off welfare, lived in the "ghetto" shit is hard when you are a target. Its easy to come from a family with enough money to send you to singing lessons, a gym, private school ect. But when you support others(family) and try to build an empire for your kids while paying bills ect making minimum wage its pretty hard. If you dont understand that life has variables and some may have had a harder start than you then stay ignorant and continue to run your house and raise bad kids assuming the ghetto is where criminals reside.

Simplethought - Since you don't know me. I grew up with nothing but didn't turn to a life of beating women. My family never used welfare no matter how hard times were - I went in to the service in order to gain a better life for myself. I didn't produce a load of kids I couldn't provide for either. It is called self control and earning an honest living rather than mooching off the tax payers then blaming them for my troubles.
