In voting for Joliet's Athlete of the Year 2011-12, who gets the biggest roar from the crowd?
Joliet Catholic Academy senior Nick Collofello was a starting defensive tackle and linebacker for the Class 5A state football runnersup. He also advanced to the state wrestling tournament for the second year in a row and earned all-state honors by placing sixth in his weight class. He will play football next school year at the University of St. Francis.
Joliet Catholic Academy senior left-hander Kevin Duchene was named MVP in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. He finished with an 8-0 record and a 0.13 ERA. He totaled 96 strikeouts in 52 innings. He was nominated as a Louisville Slugger All-American. Duchene will pitch next season at the University of Illinois.
Joliet Central senior Jada Green was the captain and leader of the Steelmen girls volleyball team. She not only played outside hitter, but also served as a role model for her teammates because of her work ethic. She was the winner of the Steelmen Award. Green also played badminton and boasted a 4.0 GPA. She will be attending the University of St. Francis.
JCA junior football all-stater Ty Isaac rushed for 2,629 yards and scored 51 TDs, both school records. He and his father Tyrone are the only father-son combo to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season in JCA history. Ty rushed for 515 yards and scored six TDs in the 5A state title game. He is committed to USC.
Joliet West senior Matt Koran was a three-year varsity starter and captain in football. He placed fifth in the IHSA state wrestling tournament as a senior. In baseball, he led Joliet West to the Southwest Suburban Blue championship during his senior season. From the fall of 2010 to the spring of 2012, he earned six straight all-conference awards in his three sports.

Rachelle deserves this honor because she is not only a superb athlete, but also a gifted student that excels in the classroom and a genuinely caring and kind person.

J Hostert: I agree it's worth measuring an individual's whole package before casting a ballot. All the candidates here are deserving. Thanks for your comments.

Matt Mammo Mammoser for not only playing great football but for being a great kid and never giving up even when facing his own mortality. What a great example he has left for all high school athletes to follow!

We have never seen a football player as talented as Ty Isaac in this area or for this state for that matter and may not ever see another one like him. He's got my vote.

Chris: How do you think Ty Isaac will fare at USC playing against a Pac-12 schedule? Do you picture him piling up big numbers for the Trojans? Playing in the NFL one day?

Matt Koran, three sport all conference and great in the class. I mean he's going to Harvard but to excell in not one but three sports? Seems clear to me.

Matt Koran is Joliet's truest athlete! He's the all around student athlete. In an age when you don't see the multi-sport athlete, he's excelled in all 3 sports he's chosen to participate in. He not only excelled but is a 7 time all conference athlete in Football (in the toughest conference), Wrestling (where he placed 5th in state), and baseball (where he hit .330 6 HR's 17 doubles and stole 17 bases). All this done while still maintaining a 4.46 GPA and heading to Harvard. He's also a very well spoken modest young man who gives and gives. He's volunteered for the miracle league for 4 years now and is heading to Haiti at the end of this month. My vote goes to Mr. Matt Koran! Good Luck @ Harvard!!

Can't get a better candidate than Matt Koran with all his honors, accomplishments and athletic excellence. He excels in everything he does due to his dedication, commitment and hard work. He is an outstanding example of a fine young man, student and all star Athelete in baseball, football and wrestling, and still maintained a 4.46 GPA. What a well-rounded student, who takes such pride in his school and who is thankful to all his coaches/teachers for their guidance. Matt is a kind, considerate, respectful and loving young man and would be a perfect candidate to represent Joliet's Athelete of the Year.

Let's not forget about CALVIN EDWARDS. He ran 8 races at state and still was able to get 2nd in the 100m and 200m. This is an incredible senior athlete.
