Trader Joe’s in Plainfield? Maybe, Says Property Owner

No confirmed negotiations, but owner of Barnes & Noble site is ‘courting’ the high-end grocery store.

A Plainfield Trader Joe’s store has long been on the wish list of many Plainfield residents, and it could happen, according to the company that owns the site occupied by the soon-to-close Barnes & Noble store.

Edwards Realty Co. Vice President Ramzi Hassan said reports that his company is in negotiations with the high-end specialty grocer are premature, but noted they have been "courting" Trader Joe’s to bring a franchise to the site, located at 12700 S. Route 59.

“We have not entered into any negotiations with anyone definitively for the site,” Hassan said. “That’s not to say we don’t hope to in the future.”

Hassan said he spoke with village officials about the possibility of a Plainfield Trader Joe’s, adding that the retailer is “always at the top of the list” of resident surveys on most-wanted businesses.

A Plainfield village official said he couldn’t confirm any negotiations between Edwards and Trader Joe’s.

Edwards Realty is working with Mid-America Asset Management to reach out to several retailers that could be a good fit for the site, Hassan said.

“That’s not to say we’re not courting [Trader Joe's],” he said, adding of the company, “ … That’s not to say they aren’t looking at it at all.”

Village officials confirmed that Barnes & Noble will close at the end of the year, citing an inability of the company to reach a lease agreement with Edwards Realty. According to Hassan, the closing date is Dec. 31.

Hassan said community support could help encourage Trader Joe’s to come to Plainfield.

On its website, Trader Joe's provides a location request form for residents who want to see a store come to their communities.

Hassan added Edwards hopes to have a tenant or tenants in the former Barnes & Noble store by late 2013.

The retailer’s Chicago-area locations include Naperville, Downer’s Grove and Glen Ellyn. According to the Trader Joe’s website, a new location is planned for Evanston.

I sure hope that the village trustees understand how important it is to make this happen. What would be a real pleasant surprise is if maybe we went back to Portilo's and apologized for being such snobs and beg them to reconsider Plainfield. I am getting tired of driving 6 miles to get a decent hot dog.

@CONCERNED

I agree 100 percent with your statement, it's a pita to go to Oswego or Bolingbrook to get Portilo's.

I would love to spend money in my own community than to continue giving it to Naperville! One Trader Joe's, please.

This would be a great addition to Plainfield. I have a feeling our city planners will seem to think an Ultra Food or Big Lots would fit better - but please NO! Plainfield NEEDS a TJs!!! Fill out the request form of concernedresidents...this can only improve our town!!

@Concerned resident....I would also love a Portilo's.....I'd heard Plainfield could not justify it at Carton Farm and 59....because there was not enough "traffic"...Just meaning there was not enough business to be had there....

Why do you all think it's up to village planners & trustees? This is mainly between a landlord and potential tenant. It's pathetic watching these comments from people begging their government for a grocery store.

@Jimmy

I don't know for sure about Edwards Realty and Barnes & Noble, if that was the same situation that forced Limestone and other business away from where Nevin's now is, due to the landlord going through a bankruptcy and raising rents to where it forced those places to move away as it became unprofitable for them to stay.

Jimmy, why so bitter? While the primary transaction would indeed be between the landlord and the tenant, there are many dimensions of "recruiting" a business (and make no mistake - that's what it is) like Trader Joe's where a strong, collaborative private/public partnership is a requirement for success. A typical Trader Joe's store does about $30 million/year in (tax revenue-generating) sales, and the village should and does have a great interest in encouraging this kind of positive business presence in our community. The village has a big role in critical aspects such as planning, infrastructure, services, zoning, permitting, demographic and traffic research, labor, and incentives. Those are just a few off the top of my head, and that's why the village's Advisory Task Force on Economic Development (funded by our tax dollars) exists. So, instead of labeling the community's excitement as "pathetic", why don't you turn off the Fox News for a couple of hours, go outside and take a walk in the sunshine, and try to develop a more cordial and upbeat outlook toward your neighbors. Have a fantastic day!

@Jimmy the village has final approval, they shot down Portilo's not because of traffic rather "Look". Ask White Castle about the conversation they had with the village about changing their stores classic Blue and White appearance. Plainfield for a very long time wanted only brown ordinary buildings, Portilo's did not fit the mold and they walked away.

I thought this site got rid of the whole 'writing headlines with question marks' as acceptable, when the last editor went out the door. It reeks of unprofessionalism.

Tiffany's in Plainfield? Maybe, says someone who wants one really bad.
(but no such negotiations are actually happening)
Is there a serial arsonist running loose in town? Maybe, says someone who lets fear run their life.
(but no evidence at all supports this claim)

It's sad really, because it looked like this site had turned itself around from the gossip rag that it had previously been known for.

Of all places too, another story about food. You have to remember the previous editor is in Joliet and just did a story on Tony's Finer Foods. There must be some fascination about reporting the opening and closing of food stores and restaurants. There's many more important issues that should be reported on rather than pure speculation of 'what' might come in next.

What is your point? So the reporter is assigned to do stories about food. No one has to read this story if they don't want to. I personally found it interesting. I'm sure someone else will write a more important story that suits you.

I told my friends and family, the ONLY thing that would make B & N's closing more bearable, was if a Trader Joe's went in the space- I have been hoping for a TJ's in Plainfield for MANY years!!! It's the perfect spot!!!

Why isn't anybody concerned about a landlord and an established business not reaching an agreement on a lease? I think its code for landlord raising the rent too much. Will they do the same thing to the next business that moves in- at the end of 2013? Maybe a consistent tenant is better for the community.

It's obvious that Edwards Realty doesn't know what they're doing as they put in 2 frozen yogurt stores within a month of each other. Having a big box vacancy through most of 2013 (they've said) until they find a tenant instead of working with Barnes was another dumb move. I'm pretty convinced they don't care what's good for Plainfield and I'll bet a dive such as Big Lots will be put in.

@Mom

You are correct. It seems like mismanagement like what happened at Limestone, where a landlord was in financial difficulty and thought that the best way out was to raise rents on occupants, not understanding that if they do, the occupants will leave. I t never ceases to amaze me how business types can be so myopic to the realities of business. Yes, two yogurt shops, same location, what makes them think that they will be there long term ? Maybe we should start a pool, like office pools, on h ow long either or both of them will be gone ?

I don't want to get anyone too excited, well actually I do. On Saturday, January 12th, 2013, I was at Sally Beauty Supply in Plainfield (don't ask) and was speaking to a sales associate about whether they had heard anything about what is going to happen to the Barnes & Noble store front. She informed me that Trader Joe's has actually been calling current tenants and inquiring about how busy that location is.

I then spoke to the manager, Sonia and she confirmed that yes indeed they are calling current tenants and actually she had spoken to a TJ's representative, personally. Well, fingers crossed, people, fingers crossed.

Lucy, you are a moron. When you go to a store have you ever asked the name of an employee? Did they answer you, if they did, did they ask you not to tell anyone else? Did it surprise you that they told you such secretive information? Thanks for your meaningful contribution.

It would be nice for the town of Plainfield to have something other than a bunch of gas stations, car repair centers, and banks! We need better anchor stores to draw people to our town! Go Trader Joe's!
