Teenage Boy Charged With Massive Plainfield Schools Job Site Hack

A Joliet West High School student was pulled out of classes and charged with sending a raunchy racist message to Plainfield school district job applicants.

Updated 6:15 p.m. Oct. 19:

Federal agents and Joliet detectives tracked down the boy behind a massive hack of the Plainfield school district's job application site, a police source said.

The 14-year-old Joliet West High School student was pulled out of classes Friday morning and taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center, the source said.

The boy was charged with computer tampering in connection with a breach of the Plainfield School District 202 online job application system last week.

More than 20,000 people who applied for jobs with the district received what district spokesman Tom Hernandez described as an “inappropriate and offensive message.”

One past job applicant said she received one of the emails. The message was titled “Plainfield School District 202 has had a security breach.”

The email, which addressed the applicant by name, contained a racial slur and boasted about hacking into the system.

A source with the Joliet Police Department said it really didn't take much talent for the teen to pull of his obscene stunt.

"There was some concern it was a more sophisticated hacking event," the source said, calling the boy "just a 14-year-old computer-savvy individual."

FBI agents assisted the Joliet police in cracking the case but he will be tried in Will County juvenile court.

The teen has no prior criminal record, the source said.

The company Apex Solutions owns the job application website used by District 202. An Apex Solutions vice president said last week that the hacker used a Plainfield 202 username and password to access the database of employment applications to "send an obscene email."

Hernandez said while the district is confident no sensitive information was compromised, job applicants can remove their information from the site if they choose.

"We have no evidence that any unauthorized individual has actually retrieved and is using personal information that applicants or employees may have submitted to the district’s job application system," Hernandez said in an email Friday night. "However, you may have your personal information removed from District 202’s job application system by sending an email to removejobinfo@psd202.org  with your name and the email address used when you applied for a job with District 202."

So you sit and supervise every minute each of your children are on the computer? Let me guess... you don't have children.

He's 14. Maybe they thought he was doing homework or playing a game. I'm sure they are probably having a hard time dealing with this.

From what I have seen, our kids are sharp on computers....This doesn't surprise me....

my question is why does our school system have such easily accessed computer files? shouldn't they have more security than just a user name and password? I mean even facebook has fail safes if you want to change things and you have to put in maiden names and other things. What a shame that our kids information could be just as easily hacked into or our information for that matter! But no one is talking about that just about the fact that this kid was 14. Someone should be thanking him for showing the district how easy it is to break into the system and screw things up!

The kid didnt really do any hacking. The media and uneducated folks tend to to think anything done on a computer is hacking. He simply siffed the password to the server and was able to access the files and send a mass email from the schools account. pretty basic stuff considering most schools have computers and laptops laying around and not verydifficult to do and probably took about 10 minutes. Its the same basic ay if someone drives through a neighborhood with a laptop they can easily jump on home networks and get your harddrive info from outside. Very basic stuff

The kid is 14, would you stand over your 14 year olds shoulder and watch every single thing he or she did while online? Of course you wouldn't. You police them realistically and hopefully they dont do something stupid. To try and blame this on bad parenting is absurd.

@Jim, i'm just curious. What does Obama has to do with this story? I am trying to understand. What does this have to do with the office of the president or the nation being destroyed? It does not take long to know the type of person you are...you need to look at yourself in the mirror...by the same measure you hate, by that same measure hate will come at you and you will have to answer to a higher power the day you die...just remember that!

Stein Jolietus, Jim is so right. My husband of 30+ years was Puerto Rican, about as dark as Obama's wife, much darker than the light yellowish-tan Obama is, and our family is a melting pot of Puerto Rican, Irish, Mexican, Filipino, black, & Chinese so you can keep your hate/racist theory to yourself. Obama & his wife are two of the biggest racists to ever embarrass America, IMO. Read his books and her college thesis to learn from their own words what they think about Americans, reinforced by over 20 years of listening to Jeremiah Wrights virulent rhetoric of hate. A 14 year old makes a racial slur (which we have no idea how much of a slur it was) and people act like it's the end of the world. I'd vote for Herman Cain in a minute but never for Obama.

Jim you ae right. Stein, you can not see that since this "president" took office everything is racist, EVERYTHING! I live as the only white person in my area and it has gotten unbearable and dangerous in some areas of the city since he has started his war on everything non black, in more ways than color mind you. I have never been racist and never felt so threatened, I get called all kinds of awful "whitey" names and am told I do not belong here, been attacked with rocks, sewer eggs and my property destroyed. If I try to file a report, I am racist. I think they are trying to start a war. Janie, to you andyour family, thank you for loving this country I admire immigrants who do it the right way.

Sadly every arm chair quarterback is going to chime in and find a way to blame the biggest easiest target… the school district. YES the district should make every reasonable effort to prevent things like this as well as make sure their out sourced companies keep the same standards. To assume they just allowed this and didn’t have safeguards in place would be just incorrect and naive.
This is the act of a “criminal”, “punk”, “thief”, “racist”, or whatever you want to call him, he is the one to blame! He is the one who took the steps to break into and steal information. He is the one who chose to use vulgar, racist, and instigating words. This e-mail was more than a “kids prank”, this is a criminal act that effected thousands of people. I am sure I am not the only one who was worried about confidential information being stolen. His age is simply irrelevant, he knew what he was doing was wrong and I hope he punished accordingly!

have you met most 14 year olds today? they don't know right from wrong. they aren't even sure how to read directions on the back of a mac and cheese box. I wouldn't even trust a 14 year old to watch my dog. Kids today have no moral scrupples. We live in an age where the only attention kids are seeking is which one gets them the most internet hits. Jail is not the answer more aggresive training and postivie moral upbringing is!

Katie I have a 15 yo kid helping me with some yard work projects and he is both dependable but works hard and fast. To say that most kids today don't have are all bad apples is just wrong, I find most kids today to be very insightful. Each generation has said the say thing about kids since ancient Greece and they always will.

If he had the username and password that is not hacking. That is complete stupidity on the part of someone for leaving that information unsecured and available to a student. While the article tries to play down the hacking aspect I'd be more concerned about the lousy security that is clearly in place that account credentials with permissions of this sort is so readily available to someone it shouldn't be. Shame on someone.

My bank sets a cookie in the browser, as well as checks the IP the connection is coming from. If neither of those have previously been placed or verified, the login will not continue no matter what, even if you are using the correct name and password. My remote desktop does the same, as does my email, sensitive financial and personal files are encrypted.

But then again, I actually understand the tools that I am using. If you treat it like a 'magic box' that just 'does things', like the school and Apex seem to have done, then things like this are only going to be a matter of time before they happen.

What this whole event has shown quite clearly, is that the school district didn't have a plan for this. It was very disorganized, contradicting statements were being made day-to-day, and at the height of the confusion the best they could do was give people a copy/paste from the FTC website. The event itself might have been mostly harmless, which would be incredibly lucky, but the lack of a plan from the district is what is most troublesome. Whoever is in charge of these decisions, is not obviously not qualified.

The most important message here is the 14yr old having such a strong feeling towards other people. Is it racism being taught to him, is he in that skin head gang or any type of hate gangs? I think that should be addressd as well as punishment for breaking into the school computers. Principal , take care of business. Secure records and computers. This might be a wakeup call.

Plainfield doesn't have any racism at all. Nope, not one single bit.

Don't you remember Mr. Lamberts stories about the KKK, and how it all was all just something that happened in the distant past, and it is nothing to concern yourself with these days? The stories posted here on this very site, clearly showed that organized racism in Plainfield stopped sometime in the first half of the 20th century.
http://plainfield.patch.com/articles/lambert-the-real-truth-about-plainfield-s-history-with-the-ku-klux-klan
Here it is reported that the Klan officially disbanded in Plainfield in 1944's.
That's the story, and don't you dare question it! Just something in the distant past, that's all. If we don't talk about it, it can't possibly exist, right?

Vicki Garcia, I agree with your assessment. This 14 yr old was born innocent without bias, prejudice or antisemitic strong feelings until this youth was indoctrinated by parental and family influences. Amazing this President is blamed for every ill in this nation and openly denigrated as no other. I'm waiting on his blame for the crack in the liberty bell! Another note, the Romney camp is fuming about the precious lives lost at the embassy as a political wedge... but seemingly no concern regarding the three thousand plus American and Allied forces precious lives loss in Iraq due to a lie by Bush and his administration. Say what you may, President Obama did start bringing our heroes home in addition to the American Jobs Act and Veterans Work Bill which the GOP Congress refuses to pass, hindering the economic growth and employment...reason, to make "him" a one term.

Actually, a 14 year old gave the middle finger to all taxpayers in District 202 as well as Margie and Roger Bonuchi. We have elected Margie Bonuchi as Village Trustee, Who got a sweet puffed Pension by her District 202 IT job from her husband, the President of the District 202 School Board, Roger Bonuchi...who drives free vehicles from the taxpayers. He's got something to do with PEMA AS WELL. THESE TWO PEOPLE COULD NOT FEED THEMSELVES WITHOUT GOVERNMENT "PUBLIC SERVICE"

These two are amazing...they support Garret Peck, John Argoudelis, Liz Collins & Lee ann Goodson. All of the above call themselves Republicans. Y'all keep getting over taxed, over spent & plunged into debt by this fine group of Republicans! Keep voting for them...it's like the Democrats who keep voting for Jesse Jackson Jr...not a bit of difference between Cook & Will county.

I am a parent of 3 teenage boys. I feel he just did a stupid prank like some teenagers will do. Yes this one affected thousands, therefore making it much more serious. Send the boy to the "Beyond Scared Straight" then follow up with 1 year community service and counselling. Lastly an apology letter to all those affected by his mass emailing should be just fine.
