'Sorry' Stepdad Gets 14 Years in Prison For Beating Little Girl
The Joliet man apologized for his actions but the judge still gave him 14 years.
A Joliet man facing up to 15 years in prison for beating his young stepdaughter got almost the maximum, with the judge giving him 14 years behind bars.
Richard Harris, 35, had pleaded guilty last week to a charge of aggravated battery to a child. He also told Judge Sarah Jones he was "sorry."
Harris was arrested in February 2011. He allegedly beat his 2-year-old stepdaughter.
Harris will have to serve at least 85 percent of the 14 years.
Judge Jones will entertain a motion to reconsider her sentence on Feb. 26.

He is sorry that he was caught. This was not a one-time occurrence, the testimony pointed to repeated beatings of this little girl.

The sad part about it, is he will probably spend less time in prison than his sentence calls for.

Judge to entertain a motion to reconsider sentence Feb. 26th, 2013. I pray for her that she makes a wise decision, it's not easy. Years ago I would have said string him up, give life for this crime because of having been a victim of child abuse myself. However, I look at prison as not a place of healing this kind of issue. This is a real need in the system today. Let's pray this little girl get's the healing she needs, and doesn't have to come into his presence ever again. Lord, protect our children.

Where did you get 7 years? The article said he was sentenced to 14 years and will have to serve a minimum of 85% of that time. 14 * 85% = 11 years, 11 months. Not 7.

AGAIN, AS LONG AS AMERICA REMAINS CIVILIZED IN THE WAY IT PUNISHES THE CRIMINALS, DO NOT EXPECT ANY MIRACLES ON CRIME DECLINING! SOME PEOPLE JUST DESERVE TO DIE!

What kind of pervert beats a two year old child? I hope he does not get released earlier and that the Judge will stick to her guns. And where is Momma?

When will women wise up & be more selective in the type of men they date and marry? Surely he had shown tendencies toward this sort of behavior and the "mom" (she doesn't deserve that title) looked the other way. Anyone, bio dads or stepfathers, who would lay a hand on a child to inflict such pain & suffering deserve to be locked up forever & let jail-house justice take care of him. Hopefully he will suffer in prison in more ways than one. He just doesn't deserve to live and I don't know what to say about this little girls "mother." There is NO EXCUSE for child abuse - saying "I'm sorry" doesn't mean a thing. He's nothing but a worthless piece of sub-humanity.

The mom had no idea anything was going on. She wasn't aware of his drug use behind her back she wasn't aware then when she was gone he was cruel to her daughter. It wasn't until after everything that had happened did she put two and two together and then people she had babysit for her had come forward telling her about him forcing her to eat by shoving the spoon in her face and other very dominate behavior. She wishes he got life, her daughter could have died and now she gets to live her life without her daughter. She has definitely learned the signs and has gone thru domestic violence counseling as well as personal counseling to find the underlying reasons why she was nieve and ddnt see what should have been seen. The little girl has a big uphill battle but she's in a home where she has all the love and support she could ever dream of.
