Saturday Crash Update: One Dead
A Saturday afternoon crash killed Ronald Oswald of Minooka and sent five others to area hospitals.
Updated at 6 p.m. July 15
----------------------------
A Minooka man was killed in a Saturday afternoon wreck that sent five other people to area hospitals.
Motorcyclist Ronald Oswald, 57, of Minooka, died at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora following the crash at Route 126 and County Line Road.
The 2:30 p.m. collision involved a Dodge Durango sport utility vehicle, a Nissan Altima and the Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
Illinois State Police Sgt. Martez Malone said the car was about to turn south on County Line Road from westbound Route 126 when it was struck from behind by the SUV. The impact forced the car into the eastbound lane, where it struck Oswald's motorcycle.
Six ambulances transported victims to three area hospitals following the crash, according to Plainfield Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Jon Stratton.
A family of four riding in the Nissan — a mother, father, infant and a toddler — had to be extricated from the vehicle and were taken to Silver Cross Hospital. The father and the two children were listed in serious condition following the crash, while the mother was in critical condition.
"She had some pretty extensive injuries — I don't believe life threatening, though," Stratton said.
The driver of the Durango, who was reportedly ejected from the vehicle, was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. Stratton said the SUV rolled over several times during the crash.
Plainfield police assisted state troopers in handling traffic in the wake of the wreck.
On Sunday, Malone said the cause of the crash remained undetermined.

I went to high school with Ron Oswald, who was a great person. He was a member of Fallen Angels. He would meet the bodies of fallen soldiers at area airports and escort the body to the funeral home and stand guard overlooking the them. His death is such a loss and will be missed by many.

How horrible! After the last bad wreck on 126 with the 3 kids, I left a comment about how dangerous Rt. 126 & Countyline Road are and how we need a stoplight there. My prayers will be for them and their families.

That's all we need are more stoplights every 1/2 mile. None of them are in sync with each other either. Takes almost 30 minutes to get to one side of town since we have to stop 3 minutes avery 1/2 mile.

Yes Plainfield Independent, you not having to take too long to get across town is SOOOOOOO much more important than saving people's lives! The universe must revolve around you.
I hope everyone who survived will pull through and be ok, and am sorry for the loss for the family of the man from Minooka.

Stoplights don't do anything for those that are distracted and/or not paying attention, the car the SUV hit was stopped, just like it would've been for a traffic light or stop sign,.. if your eyes aren't on the road, you'll run into anything in front of you. People NEED to PAY ATTENTION TO WHILE DRIVING!

There needs to be a traffic light and a turning lanes at that intersection. I think Rte 126 and County line is busier than some of the other Rte 126 intersections that have a traffic light.

I live not far from that area andit has taken the lives of many people some i have
known just a few weeks ago it was High School Grads. And we have been asking
for a light to be put in for 18 years . These acciidents are happening because of many reason Speed is one and not paying Attention is another but mostly Speed
This is a street that alot of Left turns take place and because it is not patroled
enough i noticed that there is alot of speeding so i take different ways to go home
i refuse to drive on that road but if something were to happen to one of my family
members i would hold several counties responsible and i would do my research

I'm sure when all is said and done we will find out the SUV? was texting and never saw the car turning. If this is the case should be charged and sent to jail for a long time. I'm sick and tired when I'm driving seeing many drivers texting while driving.

I believe it is the jurisdiction of where the ambulances take you to.... probably also the extent of the injuries... As simple as it may seem, the ambulance drivers know where they can take victims and not take victims... I'm sure it is all dollars and sense...... I know Joliet had boundaries.... if you were within so many miles from St. Joe;s you went there, same for Silver... If you wanted to go to ST. Joe's, and you were in Silver Cross jurisdiction, you would have to pay for a private ambulance... Insurance companies have their part in this also... Not that Silver moved, I'm sure it has changed a little... Copley is much closer than Naperville Edward... Urgent Care in Plainfield, probably was not equipped to handle that type of emergency....... But in this case, it shouldn't matter...... it was a true emergency, and insurance companies cover it regardless.
Maybe someday Plainfield will get an Edward Hospital... but until then, all we can do is use what they have.

It is SOP to take victims to different hospitals, if there is more than one in an area. In a multi-injury situation, each area hospital can handle only a certain number of life threatening injuries at a time. In addition, if a hospital also has other critical situations already, they may go on 'by-pass', meaning at that moment they are unable to take another critical care case.
What hospital you end up at is determined first by location, second by if they are at capacity or not. It has nothing to do with insurance or dollars. The only other reason you will bypass a closer hospital is if you are in need of care they can't supply, and then you usually got to that hospital to be stabilized if possible, or airlifted to a specialty center like a burn unit.
If you insist on being transported to a different hospital, then yes, you will pay and no, insurance probably won't cover it.

Most importantly, this entire side bar is completely beside the point which is that one man died and several other people are seriously injured. Is this really the time and place to throw out comments about where you would rather be taken, or if it is about what insurance companies dictate or whose jurisdiction it is?
RIP Ron, I only knew you as a face in a crowd, but it was a damn fine crowd to be part of. You will be missed, and my thoughts are with your family in their time of unspeakable grief. Your family has the support of the community. I know that is little comfort but for now it is all we can give, but we give it with all our hearts.

That intersection is dangerous for many reasons. It's on a curve. It's hard to see until you're right on it if you're going west. That's enough reason. Don't assume texting and helmets when you don't appear to know anything. And driving without a helmet is legal.

I'm Plainfield, born and raised. I know 126. Westbound, before Countyline Road, there is a slight curve (it is covered up on the map by "126"). A SLIGHT curve. I drove it today. I left some flowers for my dear friend, Ron, who lost his life there. I paid attention and could see the intersection clearly. (Key words, PAID ATTENTION) To me, I had plenty of time to slow down, if there had been a car stopped to turn left. I did so myself. The car behind me had no problem slowing and stopping. I agree, tho, that it is a bad intersection, always has been. My daughter uses it all the time to go to Oswego. Scares me. Sure, it needs a light. So does Oswego Road and 126, Schlapp Road and 126.............
That being said, I think the lives of the people involved are more important. I lost a dear friend there (God bless him), there is a family of 4 that were hurt there. Familys have been effected by this guy who simply wasn't paying attention for some reason we may never know. Just please pray for all the families and friends and for the ones involved. Thats all.

I avoid that intersection as well as 126 & Plainfield rd due to no traffic signal. It is dangerous to turn out left there with the fast traffic. It is no surprise this accident happened. I'm surprised there's not more! If fatalities are the requirement for a light then how did Theodore and river road get one?

How about people pay attention to the road,no light is needed there as you can only turn south there. The sport ute rear ended the Nissan going westbound, then the driver in the sport ute was ejected because they did not have a seatbelt on.There is a stoplight up the road westbound at Ridge Rd. and people still get rear ended there like the Jewel semi that drove over Shannon Orr a few years ago.

Ridge and 126 is where the jewel semi accident was and yes i hast stop signs with a flashing light but not a Red Green Yellow stop light. From County Line into the railroad tracks in downtown Plainfield the only lights are: Drauden, Rte 30/YMCA and Van Dyke.

@justmyopinion - You are right! There's only 3 lights within that two mile stretch. The one in the middle at Wallin and 126 is a temporary stop light that changes for absolutely no reason. Not one of these three lights are in sync with one another. That's probably why Plainfield is becoming the quick lube/auto clinic capitol of Illinois. You almost need an oil change, tire rotation and brake job after stopping and starting at every red light. The temporary light is supposedly going to be upgraded some time this summer but that's been a promise for many months now. Lets just keep spending a million dollars an intersection so we can stop for another three minutes, have our taxes increased, pollute the environment, rely on foreign oil all because a few bad drivers. The state can blow a million bucks so we can wait longer and the crashes will still happen. It'd be amazing how much money this world could save if drivers simply applied some common sense and pay attention.

Buford, I MAY be mistaken but at the time that the Jewel/Shannon Orr accident happened, I don't believe there was the flashing light over the stop sign at that intersection. I may be even more wrong here, but I'm not sure that was even a stop sign on 126 at the time.
My (possibly faulty!) recollection is that the cement truck and Shannon were stopped behind a school bus picking up some kids from the migrant farm that was there. As the bus was moving away and turning south on Ridge is when the collision occurred I believe. Again, that was 7 years ago but that seems to be my recollection.
The stop sign, or at least the flashing warning light above it were added after that incident.

If you go to Chicago Breaking News, you'll get the whole story. A Nissan was making a left turn & was hit from behind by a Durango. The Durango rolled over several times & hit the motorcycle driver. The woman in the Nissan is in critical condtion as well as the motocycle driver. This is just terrible, & in this case I don't think a stop light would have made a difference. Maybe a driver driving more slowly & paying attention would have made a difference.

You cannot put a stoplight at every crossing onto 126, which happens to be a road with trucks and cars traveling 55 +. Most of the accidents I have heard/seen, involve people turning onto 126 and not getting up to speed fast enough. Most turns are done slowly and people seem to not be able to judge the speed of oncoming vehicles which lead to these tragic accidents. Sop light are not the answer, teaching good, safe, driving techniques would be better.

UP10, whether or not he was wearing a helmet does not and should not matter. If the driver of the SUV didn't slam into the other car, that motorcyclist would be alive. He's not, and that is a tragedy that your insensitive, pointless comments just make worse. We do not yet have all the facts, but it would seem from what has been reported elsewhere, the nature of the crash would have been fatal with a helmet. Unless or until you know for a fact that he would have survived with a helmet, keep your speculation to yourself. The motorcyclist was obeying the law. The driver of the SUV did not. Perhaps it is one of those things that just happens and there is no gross negligence on anyone's part, but to go where you are is inappropriate, insensitive and just plain vicious.

As I was at the scene (driving in my car in front of her), I was asked where to send her. Its nice how everyone has a solution here without knowing any facts. More signs/lights and all the rest of the useless banter. Bottom line is one family lost a member and two others are dealing with serious injured family members. When the investigation is done, best outcome is SUV driver was just not wearing a belt and suffered some condition as to why he rear ended a stopped car. If it was just lack of attention while driving i.e. , texting, reading, eating, or drinking, then he should be charged as accordingly up to and including murder. Either way none of the outcry above could have changed this situation and I hope it was truly an accident and not someones reckless behavior.

You are foolish if you believe a traffic light prevents all accidents. Even if they have red light cameras too. It's still going to happen. People tend to drive faster when they have to stop at a red light every half mile around town.

Stoplights don't do anything for those that are distracted and/or not paying attention, the car the SUV hit was stopped, just like it would've been for a traffic light or stop sign,.. if your eyes aren't on the road, you'll run into anything in front of you. People NEED to PAY ATTENTION WHILE DRIVING!

For marissas comment. Helmets do help but I worked for 20 years as a phlebotomist. We were always the first to the er to draw blood. Motorcycle accidents are the worst and my opinion from what I have seen they are not truly life saving. This is only my opinion.

People have accidents at 80 MPH and 35 MPH!
People Die with Helmets and without Helmets!
People Crash at intersections with lights and without light!
Crash texting or not texting!
Just let the people Grieve and get over your politics!

Thank-you T-Bone! I wish people would stop being so insensitive when there are victims families on here. May Mr. Oswald R.I.P. and my sympathies go out to his daughter and family. I pray the family injured in the SUV recovers fully and quickly!

We don't need another light at this intersection. The best solution is to put ina turn lane to go south onto County Line Rd from westbound 126. And have a turn lane for those wishing to go west on 126 from northbound County Line Rd. The state of Illinois has jursidication at this intersection and when I talked to Tom Cross' representatives I am always told the same thing, the state is broke, we can't afford it. I have been on this issue for the last 3 years. How many more accidents and fatalities have to occur before our elected officals will listen to us?

I agree! At the very least put a shoulder so people can pass on the right. Everyone who drives in that area knows that there is usually a car turning left there.i feel so sorry for everyone involved because it shouldn't have happened.

I agree with Joe, put a turn lane in. A turn lane also at Ridge rd. Too much traffic along there not to have turn lanes!

126 has increasingly gotten worse since the growth of Plfd. All along 126 to Yorkville there have been accidents and deaths. Lights and stops signs would help alot but people need to be more aware and present when driving. The fact is too many drivers aren't paying attention or they are driving too fast. I have had cars and semi trucks trying to pass me when i was doing the speed limit. I was glad to see stop signs up at County Line Rd finally after so many deaths there over the years. I was dating Shannon Orrs brother at the time of her accident and i will never forget him answering the door to a pair of policemen coming to tell his family about the fatal accident. I do not wish that on anyone. Just slow down people, and remember when you are driving you need to pay attention to the road. Even more so if you are not familiar with the area you are in. How hard is that?? Life is short....don't rush. My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones this weekend.

People tend to drive faster with more stop signs and three minute wait times at a red light every half mile. It's just like the war on drugs - a complete failure - you're not going to stop drug use by putting people in jail.

Which is why people need to just stop driving so fast and start paying attention "Plainfield Independent". Perhaps you should do the same while reading.

If stop signs and stop lights were the answer to accident deaths they'd be at every intersection in the country. Obsviously, it won't and wouldn't solve the problem.

It makes me very ad to hear of any injuries, or loss of life because of an accident. We don't know for sure why it happened, but the loss is still the same.
-Yes, I think they need a light there. In over 25 years, I have seen many accidents there.
-No. lights won't stop all accidents, but it does make people be pay more attention if they think they may have to stop.
On this part of 126, it's easy to get trapped in the "open road" syndrome when you finally get to go 55 after traveling through the congested Plainfield area. A light and left turn lanes there would make it safer for everyone. Anyone who complains about having to stop to much, doesn't care about making things safer. Hopefully they will never have to learn first hand how important safety is. We can try to convince people to stop doing distracted things while driving, but a light will help save lives.

Brandon - where did you get the information that stoplights make people pay more attention? Was this from a study or just your own opinion? There are many thriving red light camera companies which would make me think otherwise. If stoplights made people pay more attention then the red light camera companies would be out of business.
You also said anyone who complains about having to stop too much doesn't care about safety. I care about safety alot. I don't need a red light for my own safety. Common sense, defenisve driving, and attention go much further than a million dollar red light. Is your opinion the same of motorcyclists who don't wear a helmet? Do they not care about safety if no helmet is worn?

Laura, I was with Ron at the accident scene. I talked to him and encouraged him to fight, to hang on that help was on the way. I felt very helpless. I wish I could have done more. I am also a member of the Warrior Watch Riders. Big Luv is my riding name.

Laura, you know your dad was one of my best friends and he was also not only one of, but THE safest rider I've ever known. When I bought my first bike he personally took me out riding, just the two of us, to make sure I had the skills needed before we rode in a group. This is a sensless tragedy. Donna, I pray that everyone in your family turns out okay from this too, my prayers are with you and them. So that being said people, helmet or no helmet, stoplight or no stoplight, the fact of the matter is that Ron and the family in the car are innocent people who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. No one at this point knows why the guy in the Durango didnt see the car stopped. But I pray that this gets investigated to its fullest. And I promise that with all of the motorcycle safe groups that Ron was a memeber of, it will be. Ron, love ya buddy RIP and miss you, big hugs!!! <3

Instead of the village working with Civic Artworks to see what our feelings are about Route 59, why not consider all that is being said here? This is a terrible accident at a terrible intersection. Myself and many others who have posted comments on this page have seen firsthand that there is something terribly wrong with this intersection and many other remote Western crossings. Come on village open your eyes, I don't care what 59 looks like I do care about the lives of our residents. Do the right thing and respond to this terrible tragedy.

@concerned resident - This intersection is not part of the incorporated limits of the Village of Plainfield. This intersection is not their responsibility. This would fall under the jurisdiction of IDOT and maybe will and kendall counties. How would you like the people responsible for the jurisdiction of this roadway to respond? There's nothing wrong with the intersection. It's more about the gross lack of attention to driving a vehicle. What about the other motorcyclist that was killed on Route 59 near 143rd where the vehicle went into oncoming traffic? Do you expect 10 foot concrete walls to be constructed in all the medians so a vehicle can't enter into oncoming traffic? This is a tragic accident but spending millions in walls, signs, and stop lights are not the perfect answer and complete fix to bad drivers.

If nothing else a turn lane for west bounders that can hold a half dozen cars or so.
How much can that cost? How many now? Just in the cost of police to respond a turn lane could have been in by now.

It's sometimes good to be passionate and share your thoughts about "who" or "what" is responsible although bottom line; accidents are just that - accidents. Of coarse, we all want safe roads and constructive comments are a good thing. Bicker back n forth via posts ... well maybe not so much. My condolences to the families and their loss.

From what I have heard it is very hard to get a stop light installed. Lot's of $ and time. They are finally getting the 2nd light near Waubonsee Community College after a lot of time and effort on many different ends. It's sad that it takes so many tragedies for something positive to happen. I agree people should be more careful but remember you have your life in your hands everytime you drive. Not only do you have to protect yourself but you have to watch out for other's. It's scary.
Thoughts and prayers to the families involved.

I'm not sure if this is bickering on here. I think everyone has a heart and feels bad for everyone involved and this is why were trying suggestions to prevent more accidents. I know for a fact here in Channahon it took us years to get a few stoplights on bell & 6, 6 & Mckinley woods and finally we're suppose to get one that is badly needed in front of the high school on rt 6. It seems accidents are down. Not doing one thing is a for sure thing but it helps. I'll probably tick off alot of people on this one but I feel the speed limit should be lowered everywhere. Why do we feel the need for speed? It scares me because I have a 19 yr old on the road and a 16 yr old that is new to driving. I know we can't prevent everything from happening but we can try different options. Also if we don't speak and just sit back would anything get done? How much money does it cost for a stoplight? How much money did it cost for rod blagovich's signs to be put up on tollways? just a thought.
