Poll: Readers Say Yes to Pot Decriminalization

The change would mean someone found with 15 grams or less of pot would be issued a ticket rather than charged with a misdemeanor.

Update: Readers who voted in our weekend poll overwhelmingly supported the decriminalization of marijuana when someone is caught with 15 grams or less. Of the votes we received, 87 percent favored changing the law.

Chicago's Mayor Rahm Emanuel is the latest government official to support decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Pot would not be legalized, but the offender would be given a ticket rather than arrested on a misdemeanor charge if caught with 15 grams or less.

So, what do you think? Should pot be decriminilized in Joliet and elsewhere? Take our poll and cast your vote.

I don't really think many Americans were ever on board with the "war on drugs" in the first place. It's hard to fight in a war supported by so very few.

Yes as time goes by you see more and more people realizing how big a failure the $40 billion dollar "war on drugs" has been. Already seventeen states and the district of columbia have medical laws in place, Illinois has also voted on medical laws 2 or 3 times before with it passing in the house or senate {forget which} both times only to be shot down by the other. As I have told numerous people....We as a country are defined every few generations by a new big industry to make alot of people alot of money well, this is the next new big industry. You are talking hundreds of billions of tax dollars, I.E. Property tax, sales tax, business license, and so on. Not to mention the jobs that would be created in the process. There are so many good things to come from decriminalization, not to mention all that money the Cartels would lose in Mexico.
