[UPDATED] Police: Sheriff's Deputy Slashed with Knife; Shoots Attacker
The female deputy is expected to recover; police said 17-year-old assailant Jose Chavez was in critical condition Friday.
Updated at 2 p.m. Dec. 21:
A Will County Sheriff’s deputy shot a teenager who slashed her across the face as she and another officer responded to a domestic incident Thursday night, police said.
The teenager, 17-year-old Jose Chavez, was in critical condition Friday morning after undergoing surgery at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center.
Spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies responded to a home in the 2300 block of Gaylord Road around 7:25 p.m. after receiving a report of a subject with a knife.
Family members said Chavez was "acting erratically" and threateningly toward relatives at the home, according to Hoffmeyer.
Relatives let deputies into the home, where they encountered the teen in a hallway, police said.
Hoffmeyer said Chavez refused to comply with deputies' orders to drop the knife and lunged at a female deputy, slashing her across the face.
"She discharged her weapon" in self defense, shooting the 17-year-old once in the chest, Hoffmeyer said.
Police said the teenager was able to flee the home, but was subdued in the driveway by Crest Hill police who had also responded to the call, according to Hoffmeyer.
Both Chavez and the deputy, who has been with the sheriff's department for two years, underwent surgery Thursday night at St. Joe's.
After undergoing a two-hour surgery to repair what Hoffmeyer described as a "serious laceration to her face," the deputy is expected to make a full recovery. Chavez remained in critical condition.
Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said police have had prior contact with Chavez, "during which Chavez was a juvenile. Tonight’s behavior and attack may have been fueled by Chavez use of drugs earlier in the evening," Kaupas said Thursday.

Oldegee, Illinois IS ONE of eleven States that have more people on welfare than are employed. Those are facts reported by several news channels Dilburt and it has also been reported on line on Yahoo, and CNBC. Maybe you don't get cable or satellite TV, as the Illinois legislature is going to tax that also. We lost one House Seat already because people are moving away. These folks are full of correcting, using "proper" terms, judging, no mercy, no understanding. Its scarry. A cop has been stabbed a teen fights for his life and we are talking about the proper terms, exact street spelling, If Gaylord is a street or a road. All who cares, nonsense no one cares about. Lets care about the people not streets, and stupid stuff.

I don't mean to be rude by any means, but in what way did the teen fight for his life? It sounds to me like his parents or relatives called the police because he was attempting to stab, slash or otherwise harm the others in the house (probably due to his reported drug use earlier in the evening). With this in mind, his first response to seeing a police officer is to slash at her face? I feel bad that there has to be a shot fired by the police officer but I do not feel bad that she fired the shot at him. The situation should have never happened because he should have known better than to A) Take drugs that will mess up your ability to think clearly. B) Attack or assault family members. C) Attack an (armed) officer of the law who is attempting to disarm the situation. I feel bad for his family and friends, I am by no means heartless. But the situation does not warrant sympathy for the attempted murdered who was so recklessly out of control that he could have killed multiple people.

The situation is sad for both the deputy & the teenager. Sounds like the teen had some type of mental impairment becz his family called police becz he was acting irratic. Let's not forget the Sandy Hook teenager, sometimes the story is more complicated than we know!!

So how is the police officers family to feel if that night they got a dead family member? How would you feel if it was your family member that was attacked with a knife? You should pray that an officer never has to use deadly force, but I know you would be irrate if they hesitated and someone you cared about was injured. Wake up, look around and look at the world we live in. Hopefully you will never need them but don't complain when they do their job.

Lady b...you are a complete imbecile!!! This is a DEADLY force situation. Most police departments use of force policy say shoot if someone with a knife gets within 20 feet of an officer. My god, this officer gets slashed in th face and you say taser him???? Im shocked you didnt suggest the responding officers give the kid a hug.

The police DON'T have to wait to see and find out is this kid was going to slash or stab. Not all law enforcement agencies carry Tasers and remember, a police officer was slashed in the face. There is no other option at that point other than to shoot the offender. No hands approach is necessary and shooting is your only option.

Lady B, the use of a knife is lethal force. The officer met this scumbags level of force with the same level of force, just ising a different tool. Shame on you for suggesting that the officer did wrong by defending herself against an attack using a lethal instrument. If you call the police to your home to deal with a problem that you created by allowing this kind of behavior to occur in your home then you don't get to dictate how it's handled. The officers will work according to their training, established policies and procedures, and the law. All of which state that you don't have to wait to recieve any wound, mortal or atherwise, before you take action to protect yourself.

A kid that attacked a uniformed police officer with a knife!! Not a plain clothed under cover officer (which is still not acceptable) He knew it was a police officer, and chose to attack!! He showed he has no respect for law enforcement, which is becoming more prevalent today!! It shows by many of these post, where people are trying to make this kid out to be a victim. He is NOT the victim!! He is the assailant!! Every day we watch the news, and hear of the killings. Every one of the victims was an honor student, a member of the choir, and would NEVER be in a gang! Come on , let's stop making them a poster child for world peace and start accepting that they are thugs!! They have no respect for human life, no respect for authority, and will NEVER change unless their families and supposed friend start calling them out for what they truly are THUGS!!! They are destroying our society, and all of you that feel bad for him are nothing more than accomplices!!!!!

I think attacking a Police Officer with a knife is more than just a bad choice. Police stated they had prior contact with him so the problem with him was not a one time thing. If Mother Teresa was coming at you with a knife, you are justified to use deadly force. "Mixed Up" kid. Right. Think if he was coming at your mom or little kid with a knife. What would you want the Police to do. Take a chance with a tazer, or stop the attack.

Forgive? Let's learn a little personal responsibility here while we are at it...want to blame it on his 'bad choice' to possibly be on drugs? He still made the choice and now he and his family and frineds are paying for it. never miond the officer who was simply doing her job and could have lost her life for his bad choices.

What the officer did was out of self defense, it could have been much worse. If the 17 yr old would have listened and just dropped the weapon regardless of what may have been in his system, he would have avoided this whole situation. I am sure he's smart, and he made a "bad choice", but doesn't begin to define what he really did. Ignoring an order from a police officer is a bad choice...lunging at a armed police officer is a bad choice.
Kids in gangs need to see that their behavior isnt acceptable and shouldnt be taken lightly. Police are stepping up their actions and maybe the gangs need to realize whats important out of life...being productive members of society...using their "smarts" for good and not senseless killing or drug manufacturing and distributing. Get an education, get a job, and get off the streets!! Use your "smarts" for something better than sitting in a jail cell.

It's a terrible thing that happened, and I pray for both of them to make a complete recovery. I don't agree with the scumbag comments, you didn't know him, so shame on you to call people names after such a tragedy. I am sorry for those of you who knew him, but saying "he made a mistake" or "he messed up" are way understating what has happened here. He made the choice to do the drugs. I don't know why he did them, but if you chose to do something stupid like that, than you are choosing to accept EVERYTHING that it makes you do. This is a another example of how one person who doesn't care about other people and how their actions will effect others. They only find out too late and after innocent people get hurt, how bad of a decision they made. He should pay for what he did, and be forced to speak to other teens about how he ruined not only his life but many others by making one BIG mistake.

That night he was acting "erattic", he wouldn't drop the knife after being told to repeatedly, what if he would have ended up killing one of his family members? or killing the officer? He obviously wasn't in the right state of mind, those that know him know that he is not a bad person, but he could have killed an innocent person that night. We all know he had a bad acid trip, and I'm sorry but people who do drugs are lowlifes. He doesn't deserve to die, but he did deserve to get shot. Are you a psychologist, or an expert on peoples state of mind? Real smart people DON'T use drugs !! Were you in the house at the time of the attack? He was in a hallway according to the article, so how would you expect them to pin him down when he is armed with a knife? You think 2 cops would be enough? How many times have you subdued an man on meth? or for that matter just just highly intoxicated? I applaud the Deputies for the controlled response, considering the duress of the situation. Really smart people don't do drugs. If you think they do, you should go and seek some professinal help before you end up in a Patch article too..
The cops did their job. It doesn't matter if there were 2 or ten. Not one of them should risk THEIR life on the off chance that they can maybe subdue an attacker with a knife. Getting yelled at by the cops is scary...but when they say 'put down the knife' or 'hands up' perhaps you should listen. Yes they shot him. That's what they are trained to do when under attack, and that's what they did.

You know what the sad thing is, is that all his friends and even him if he survives, are going to keep on doing drugs and putting their life and others at risk. Bottom line is that he ATTACKED a Deputy who was there with the intent of resolving a domestic dispute. Size does not factor into this when the person is armed with any weapon! Really Laura? She is likely to need surgery more than once to correct a severe facial slash. And even then will likely always bear a scar. Being a woman I hope you can imagine how hard that is going to be to live with every single day. And yes, I am sure she knew that anything could happen when she left the station that day. But HER choice was to put on a uniform and go to work ...and protect people like you and me from people like your wonderful friend who supposedly had a bad trip or made a simple bad choice. If he had slashed you would you be so very forgiving?
And after reading your below post all I can say is that if all your friends are out doing acid and having bad trips and seeing monsters...it may well be you soon.

I knew him and he honestly had a good heart. he always meant well and he definitely does not deserve to be put through what he is. No matter what any of you think, i, as well as the people who personally knew him, know that he truly was a good person and meant well in life.

It really doesn't matter how good he was. He could have been the Pope. He was armed with a knife, refused to comply with the officers, knocked the tazer from her hand. At that point, it was all on him. My prayers are with the officer and her family.

I might never see pepe again. I saw him everyday 6th period and talked to him everyday. I saw him Thursday morning before all this happened. for you people to talk down about him really boils my blood, yes this whole incident was terrible but imagine if it was your kid this happened to? I don't blame the cop one bit, I understand it was her duty. everyone knows this happened because of drugs, but none of you seem to understand that sometimes people just can't say no to them, sometimes they can't help themselves. Pepe was a good kid who got stuck down the wrong path. no matter what any of you people say about him everyone who knows him is deeply saddened because we knew the real pepe and loved him. From what I hear the condition he is in now it hurts so bad to think a friend is basically gone. I understand what he did was wrong, I understand he has to pay for his consequences but you people should respect that a brother, a son, a friend might be gone forever. I hope the cop makes a full recovery, but for the people who continue to call pepe trash just remember you are not perfect either. If you have any respect just stop with the scum bag comments because he was nothing close to scum. you will never know what truly happened that night, so keep your rude comments out of it. love you pepe no matter what.

He was repeatedly told to drop the knife by an officer with a drawn weapon. All he had to do was drop the knife and surrender. He chose to attack the officer. Shot fired, suspect down. What about the officer that was permanently disfigured because of this guy? What about the rest of their life? This kid got what he asked for. Its time that people are held responsible for their actions in our "blame" not my fault society. I dont know the suspect and I cannot pass judgement on his character however a truly good person does not attack and slash someone across their face so I'll base my opinion on that. This kid was a loose cannon with a burning fuse.

Who says it not his fault? It is his fault yet he was not in his right mind at all and unless he wakes up and can tell us what he was thinking and what was going on we may never know the extent of what was going on with him.

Point is, its no ones fault but his. He knows drugs are bad, he continued to do them. What if some teenage boy you didn't know slashed your face? How would you feel then? He made the consious choice to take acid, which everyone knows can result in very bad things, and he decided to do it anyways. I have no sympathy for him because I know that if he recovers, he will continue to do drugs.

You dont KNOW that he will continue to do drugs.. Sometimes it takes a horrible situation such as this to make someone realize how far off course they were. None of us have the right to assume anything. If Pepe lives, which I truly hope he does, he will have a scare as well, along with jail time and the consequence of waking up everyday and knowing how badly he messed up. I can not even imagine being the police officer. The suffering she is going through is completely undeserved and I pray that she makes a very fast and full recovery.
Its things like this that truly sadden me.. its a messed up world we live in and people need to realize that God is the only solution. We need compassion and love for one another.

No one that has feeling about Pepe is saying that he was right. he was completely wrong. He was on something that made him snap I love him and know this is not something he would do in his right mind. There is a terriable drug epidemic in our state . He is not a scumbag, piece of trash, thug, who goes around and tries to kill people. What about his family, they may not have a son anymore. This is stupid and usless to argue about If he is a scum that should have been killed and a derangged lunitic or a kid that got on the real wrong track and messed up so bad he injured someone severly and may have got himself killed. The schools are filled with Pepes, and the questions has been asked "what would you say if your son or daughter or you got stabbed" well I would say the same to anyone that calls him a scum and wishes him dead, "what would you say if it was your son who did this"? Would you condem him and write him off? Would you jump for joy that another "scum bag" is off the street. Would you say he deserved it, and that the cop should have emptied her magazine, or is clip? or is drive or street? Pepe was non-violent for almost 17 yrs., he has been in my home and this is not him. Why is it so hard to beleive that this is a our ot the blue thing, someone on drugs did. I know someone that went into a mental hospital and was actually "Mental" aka not in their right mind. had to be restained etc. danger to self and others. out of their mind. this does happen to people. very sad!

For all of u that say he was a good kid? Who was there providing him his drugs? What good friends watch, and let them do it. His family could not control him and called for help. Call the police because the parent can't control their kid. Help arrives and this happens. Police r there to help not intend to hurt people. Friends should not let friends do drugs. Help them or back away. The deputy did what they train for. SERVE AND PROTECT. Serve the citizens, protect themselves as well. It is a bad situation all around. This all could have been prevented it he was such a great kid.

This was a stupid death and I hope everyone that wished him dead, this kid who just turned 17 got his light snuffed out for nothing. I dont care anymore the reality is the cop shouldnt have gotten so close to him that he was even able to stab her. really good police work. HMMM I have a gun I stand 20 or 30 feet away, if kid starts to come at me I shoot his foot or leg not his stomach. If it was me he wouldnt have even got close enough to stab me. If he was that out of his mind they should have talked to him from outside the house with a bull horn. HE DID NOT SHOOT HER BECAUSE HE HAD A KNIFE NOT A GUN. Dont bring a knife to a gun fight what does that mean. This is a wrongful death for sure. I am sure there was an alternative, but anyway he is at peace now. AND YES I PRAY FOR HIS FAMILY AND LOVED ONES. TRUTH BE TOLD THIS COULD BE ANYONE. BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD===VERY GOOD FAMILIES.

Really? You people think lethal force shouldnt have been used? You obviously have no clue about any police procedure. A PO says drop the knife, whether standing next to you or using a freaking megaphone, YOU DROP THE KNIFE. Instead he ATTEMPED MURDER. Literally. I'm surprised he was only shot once. It was a legal shooting. This was not a bad idea, he tried to kill someone, not only a woman, a police woman. Not saying he was a horrible person or that he deserved it, but he had several chances. Not only from the police but his parents too. Everyone has a choice. I pray for his family, and the career and life of the Deputy.

Maybe you should also pray for yourself to have a heart for people. This was a one time thing for this kid. Idk about all the bs that is going on about how he had this bad history and all this stupid stuff. Really so many know-it-alls. I hope the cop quits the police force, in fact this makes me never want to call the cops to my home ever again. You call to get help and your kid gets shot. He was not holding anyone at knife point. If his family felt that fearfull that he was going to hurt them they would have ran out of the house. For all we know maybe he was trying to kill himself, or when the cop walked in with the gun he freaked out. Hope you never have to deal with anything like this.

The by all means Laura...don;t call the police to your house. I agree that I am surprised she only shot him once.He ...by ALL accounts approached her with the knife rather than drop it. You can make all the excuses for his bad choice that you want. The bottom line is it was HIS choice and he paid the price for it. And so did his family and the cop. The family had a choice to walk away. The cop didn't. Your posts truly show your age. Grow up.

What a shame such wonderful, loving, sweet, knife weilding, drug using person is gone. He may have grown up and been the one to finally cure cancer, although the vegas odds were pretty high on him just being part of the cancer that is tearing this great nation apart. I've witnessed the police there and am very aware of the history of this individual. What's done is done and now there is a family in what I'm sure is an incredible amount of pain, an officer who is scarred for life and a community who you Laura say is devastated. If Pepe were still here what do you think he would say to his "friends". Maybe I screwed up. It was my fault. I wish I could take it back. Don't do drugs. Listen to your parents. Obey the law, you know the kind of stuff we always hear when it's too late. This is an unfortunate ending. I don't need to go to facebook to hear a bunch of kids speaking about someone they thought they knew. He wasn't a child!!!!! He was a drug using, lethal weapon threating adult who made many, many bad decisions and has now paid the utimate price. I sincerely hope someone makes sure those kids who are now focused on him being gone make sure they understand WHY. You want to understand why this happened? Take a few minutes from your crying and go speak to the Plainfield Police about the drug problems at the schools. Now, please pass the tissue

Wow! What happened to Plainfield! This town used to be a dream to raise a family in. My friend moved there in 98 when it was a safe neighborhood. I went to his home last summer for a BBQ and cops would cruise by every hour. He told me it's changed a lot since he'd moved there. I feel bad for him paying a fairly decent amount of property tax for what used to be. What happend to a higher education, a higher salary means you can move into a nice community. But lets face it, all the nice suburbs have crime now. Anybody been to Orland Park mall lately? Sketchy mall now. A lot of shoppers walking around with tattoos on their face. Naperville a stabbing at a bar, Romeoville, Bolingbrook, Ottawa, and what's called Joliet some people now call it "jolly-ett" It's all over and theirs nothing you can do but call the cops and keep your street hot. Keep those police busy and trouble will go elsewhere. Unless it lives next door from you. Oh and not to mention all the ghetto housing our state provides. Section 8 housing means drugs and crime for your town. They pay less than half, our state pays the rest. How can a town come together as a strong community to push drugs out when the state allows section 8 to move in.

I wasn't there and don't have the police report and did not interview the witnesses, so I can't comment of how things turned so bad so fast. IDK what happened and neither do any of you, other than the papers. Like I said before I know first hand that papers can report things that have no truth to them at all that is why when we have a jury they do not let them read the papers. That is why we have our "innocent until proven guilty" Had Pepe survived he would have a right to a fair trial, they could charge him with anything they wanted to but would have to prove it. His parent seem to be the only Non-police witness, so IDK I would have to hear and see from the people that were there what happened to make a judgment of guilt. All you educated people keep listening to the news, the papers, TV. You all are so smart and trust the system so much except the part where we have a right to a fair trial, with witnesses, evidence etc. But I'm the idiot.
