Pair Sexually Assaulted 11-Year-Old Girl for a Month, Will Sheriff's Office Says
The men, both of whom occasionally lived with the victim and her mother, have been charged with predatory criminal sexual assault.
Two men have been arrested for repeatedly sexually assaulting an 11-year-old Joliet girl over the course of a month.
Albert D. West, 24, 104 Comstock St., Joliet, and Alan M. Wilburn, 19, 642 Sullivan, University Park, were arrested this week on warrants charging them with predatory criminal sexual assualt of a minor under the age of 13.

Will County Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said sheriff's deputies learned of the sexual assaults from the girl's father, who discovered his daughter walking with West along Route 53 in the Preston Heights area of unicorporated Joliet in February.
West took off on foot when the father showed up, and the daughter subsequently confessed she was having an ongoing sexual relationship with West and Wilburn that had begun in January, Kaupas said.
The daughter was treated at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, and was later transferred to a special unit of Edward Hospital in Naperville.
The two men apparently occasionally stayed in the same Chicago Street home as the girl and her mother and another woman and her children, Kaupas said. The pre-teen has since been removed from the residence by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and now lives with her father, he said.
Warrants were issued for the two men, and Cook County made the arrest of Wilburn on Will County's behalf Monday, Kaupas said. That prompted deputies to try to find West, whom they located at his home Wednesday.
Although he initially complied with the officers, going inside to put on a shirt and shoes, he then "bolted out the front door" and deputies had to subdue him, Kaupas said. He was subsequently charged with resisting/obstructing a peace officer.
Both men are being held in the Will County jail, West in lieu of $500,000 bond and Wilburn in lieu of $225,000 bond.

Nice piece of rape apology and victim blaming. Should we credit the sheriff with a quote on this or is this bad reporting or both? An 11 year old does not "confess" to an ongoing sexual relationship with full grown men. Karen Sorensen, is this a direct quote from the sheriff?
An 11 year is not legally, emotionally or psychologically capable of consent so she does not "confess" to having an ongoing relationship with adult men as if she had any agency at all in this. This is not an ongoing sexual relationship. This is rape. This framing of what happened to this little girl is beyond offensive.

No one is blaming the 11-year-old girl. You are reading too far into the word. Yes, in most cases, the word "confess" is used to describe a suspect bringing light or admitting involvement in a criminal act. But it's not limited to that definition:
Confess (verb): 1.) Admit or state that one has committed a crime or is at fault in some way. 2.) Admit or acknowledge something reluctantly, typically because one feels slightly ashamed or embarrassed.
There, now you have two good definitions. Pay close attention to the second one in this instance. No one was saying the 11-year-old was at fault. I'm sure she was at the very least ashamed or embarrassed. No go pour yourself a glass of wine, maybe smoke a cigarette if that's your fancy, and calm yourself down.

Yes, this is rape. An 11-year-old is not legally old enough -- or emotionally old enough -- to consent to sex. However, as far as the police know, she did not tell anyone this was happening until her father asked her. You may not agree with the word "confess," which is the word used by Ken Kaupas, but I think your argument is one of semantics. Was this little girl may be been misled into thinking this was a romantic thing? I do not know, and it doesn't really matter. Any way you slice it, this was a criminal act and certainly no one is "blaming" victim, least of all the police.

Thank you for your reply. This really is bigger than semantics. This is reinforcing of language and ideas around sexual assault that needs to change. Does a guy whose house was robbed "confess" to police or family that his belongings were stolen? In that context, the use of the word confess would be obviously absurd. So why here? Because of long-held cultural beliefs that work their way into our language even when the speaker does not consciously hold that belief. Ok, but we will agree to disagree.

Karen used that word because that was the word used by Ken Kaupas, and Kaupas used that word because it is not an inappropriate word for what happened. (Clearly you did not see my definition I so generously gave in response to your first rant.) The victim of a burglary would not "confess" to having his belongs stolen because he was neither involved nor embarrassed by what happened. No one is saying it was the girl's fault or if a woman goes out dressed provocatively she is "asking for it" (you're obviously trying to bring up a PC issue). I'm sorry, is this an online newspaper or the Will County Sheriff's online police investigation database? Obviously the Patch can't put up every detail about this case because 1) they can only post what the Sheriff's Office tells them, and 2) why would the Sheriff's Office tell them anything more than this? It is truly just a story nobody know if those guys did do it or didn't do it that is the reason we have a court system. I mean nobody was there and I feel like the parents of the little girl should have charges of neglect against them. They all was living there together and it took them weeks to figure out their daughter was involved with those two guys? Something don't sound right. If that was my daughter and she was living with other guys I would ask daily if she is OK etc but justice real be served I hope the truth of this story comes out

Chester, you should feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity for an education that provided you with at least enough intelligence to be somewhat grammatically correct. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Your standards aren't as high as the law so it's okay for you to condemn someone? From what i've heard from this story is just a story. First of all where was the mother? laying on her back probably tricking off her daughter. See from what I heard that the father and mother was in a custody dispute and he wanted full custody of his daughter. What better way then accuse someone. A father is suppose to protect his children. Where was he at. And whose to say he didn't rape or molest his own child.You have to look at the whole picture.
