A 54-year-old Crest Hill man picking up a family friend after her shift at a Joliet Wendy's was shot and killed early this morning, Joliet police said.
The victim's identity will not be released until this afternoon, pending the notifcation of his family, Police Cmdr. Al Roeschner said.
The 911 call about the shooting at the 104 N. Center St. Wendy's came in at 2:40 a.m. and police arrived to find the body of the man inside his car, Roeschner said. The victim was declared dead at the scene.
Five bullet casings were recovered, and it appears the gun was shot in very close proximity to the car, which had been parked directly next to the building in the lot east of the fast-food restaurant, Roeschner said.
At this point, the murder does not appear to be gang-related and police do not believe the victim was robbed, he said. It's not known if the man was targeted, or if it could have been an attempted robbery that went wrong, he said.
Two suspects, described as black men wearing dark clothing, were seen fleeing northbound on foot from the scene, Roeschner said.
The restaurant had closed at 2 a.m., and the victim was waiting for a female employee, who is described as a family friend, he said. It's not believed the woman had any connection to the shooting.

the man who was killed was a wonderful man... he and his wife made my son a beautiful poncho when my son was born prematurely. they didn't even know us, but were friends with my mother in law. my prayers go out to the family, hopefully the people who committed this horrible act will be caught. I wish people would stop being so mean, I wish this world were a safer happier place to live in.
