Man Breaks Down Door, Slams Niece during Family Fight: Police

A violent family argument ended with the arrest of Walter Tillman on charges of home invasion and domestic battery, Joliet police said.

A Joliet man who kicked down the door to his sister's home and slammed his 11-year-old niece into the wall during a "big family argument" was arrested Wednesday by Joliet police.

Walter Tillman, 30, 217 Pine St., was charged with home invasion, a Class X felony, and misdemeanor criminal damage to property and domestic battery stemming from the fight that occurred at about 1:30 p.m. at 326 N. Center St., Joliet police Lt. Robert Desiderio said.

No information was available on what provoked the argument, Desiderio said. The niece did not require hospitalization.

Tillman is no stranger to domestic disputes, according to jail records. Twice he's been arrested for domestic battery, once in January 2008 and again in July 2009. In the latter case, he was also charged with interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

He was also arrested for a parole violation in August 2010, records show.

Tillman is being held in the Will County jail. His bond will be set at a hearing Thursday.
