Drug Deal Double-Cross Led to Murder, Police Say; Business Partner Arrested

Jermain Bennett, son of legendary boxer Joe Bennett, has been charged in connection with the death of his boxing club/training gym business partner Sean McGinn.

A Lockport man was shot and killed early Friday in a drug sale double-cross allegedly orchestrated by his business partner, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roeschner said.

Sean D. McGinn, 39, of Lockport, and Jermain Bennett, co-owners of Team Joliet KO Zone, a boxing club and training gym at 218 E. Cass St., had a deal arranged in which they were to purchase a "large quantity of cocaine" from a third party, Roeschner said.

However, Bennett double-crossed McGinn by setting up a staged robbery in the area behind the Cass Street gym, he said. McGinn was shot twice and died at the scene, and Bennett then removed a "large amount of money" from McGinn's vehicle, Roeschner said.

Bennett, 38, of Joliet, has been arrested and charged with murder, drug conspiracy and theft. Police are in the process of looking for other suspects involved in the shooting, he said.

Bennett is the son of famous boxer Joe Bennett, a seven-time Golden Gloves champion and one-time member of the U.S. Olympic boxing team. Bennett's son, Javonni, is an aspiring boxer who won state, national and world boxing championships in 2010.

Joe Bennett declined to comment on his son's arrest Friday afternoon.

Friends described McGinn as a devoted father, friend and coach who was committed to getting kids off the street by giving them a different outlet at the gym. A sign at the club reads, "Drop the Guns, Put on the Gloves."

Duane Stanford said he knew McGinn as the manager of the Lockport Vipers, the baseball team for whom Stanford's 12-year-old son played.

On several occasions, McGinn invited team members to join him at the gym.

"He had them come over not for the baseball team, but just to connect with them, just to bond with them," Stanford said. "I'd become very attached to (McGinn) because of the way he was with the kids."

Stanford, who learned of McGinn's death at about 9:30 a.m. when a McGinn family member texted Stanford's wife, said team members were devoted to McGinn, who led them to a championship tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y., just this summer.

"When we told our son (about McGinn's death), he just dropped to his knees," Stanford said.

The baseball tournament victory had to be bittersweet for McGinn, he said, given that McGinn's own son was unable to play this season due to a "rare stomach illness." At Cooperstown, they saw photos of another of McGinn's sons, who had been a star youth baseball player.

McGinn, who was divorced, had been planning to travel this weekend with his girlfriend and two other couples to an out-of-town wedding of a former co-worker he knew from working at Jameson's Pub in Joliet, Jameson's manager George Cosmas said.

Cosmas said he remained friends with McGinn even after he left the restaurant about a year ago, and said McGinn had dropped by just last week to visit. McGinn's girlfirend still works there, he said.

"He was just a good guy," Cosmas said. "He was an energetic, friendly guy. He was a good employee as well as a good friend."

McGinn was a native of the Lockport area who attended Joliet Junior College and owned Celtic Green Landscaping in Lockport.

Stanford described the 6-foot-2 McGinn as a teddy bear. "He was as calm as they come. ... I don't think he had a mean bone in his body."

Cosmas added that he was devoted to his children.

"He loved to spend time with his kids. He was always working two or three jobs to make sure they had what they needed."

In my opinion, it is wrong for the police or anyone else to report that the shooting was the result of a drug deal when NO drugs were reported found at the scene. My theory is that the partner probably owed McGinn money and when he finally paid his debt, the partner arranged to set it up a robbery with a third person and when things did not go as planned McGinn was shot and the partner took the money back which was found in his car. IF it was a drug deal that money would have been GONE and in the killer's hands which may be exactly where it ended up. Just a theory. It does not seem like McGinn was involved in drugs to me reading the above article.

No drugs were found at the scene. It was a set up by Bennett. There were never any drugs. The tribune reported on this, too:

I agree with HH. How can the Police make, as a matter of fact statements, when NO drugs were found?? Are they taking the word of the no good business partner, Bennett? The above article sounds to me like he is not to be trusted. Lets respect the dead and his family!

The point of the article, it was McGinn being "lured McGin to the rear of the Joliet KO Zone Gym on the 200 block of East Cass Street with the promise of a non-existent quantity of cocaine."

Things are not always as they seem.

I think they should just keep their damn mouths shut and solve the case! Then make the TRUE story known. Why tarnish a man's reputation that isn't here to defend himself!! It's not the fact if drugs were involved or not its the fact a male individual that isn't a man because he had to use a gun, because he knew Sean would have kicked his butt!

Since the victim is unable to defend himself, nobody will ever know what was said to him that "lured" him to the back of the gym. We are innocent unless proven guilty in this country. His children know he was kind hearted and not involved in anything that would cause harm to others. We would appreciate the support of the community as they are trying to cope. Their hero has been taken from them by a vicious coward. Enough damage has been done.

I can't believe some of these comments I'm reading. Okay, we'll go with the baseless comments rather than the professional police investigation: There was a burglar alarm in the alley that only Bennett was aware of. He called McGinn for help. They were going to check it out together since they were BFF's. Then, all of a sudden, some evil creature came out of the sky from the land of wizards and unicorns and shot McGinn to death. Bennett was so scared, and knew no one would believe what really happened, that he made up the story about the fake drug deal.

C'mon people! I'm not saying Sean was a bad guy. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that can control their drug problem without letting it get in the way of family. He was a great father and a great coach, I'm sure. But if it quacks like a duck and waddles like a duck, it's a duck.

Some people here should get a job on future episodes of "Crime Scene Investagations" The fact of this matter is quite simple... There are now TWO men that were killed at that gym, end of story. There are and have been several boxing clubs in Joliet that have never witnessed anything remotely close to this. One gym, The Joliet Park District Boxing Club ran for over 15 years without incident another gym Bucky's House of Pain ran for 10 years without incident, yet another gym now open for close to 5 years Joliet Boxing Team has gone without incident. One murder was enough, that gym should have been closed up. Now you have two murders.

It's just how it's done in Joliet.believe it or not some high ranking people deal drugs.. I used to have a lawyer that did all kinds of coke...found out when I seen him partying...said there is all kinds of people that throw other people in jail for cocaine and do the stuff them selves...reason.? Because they got caught and it is there job to follow the law when a person is caught committing a crime....that's what they get paid for....there are high ranking business men in Joliet that deal cocaine...just take a look at all of the illegals that come here where do you think they get tmost of the money to just come in and but buildings, high dollar cars..where do you people ink most people get the money to start businesses.lol you are very weak minded to think powerful people do not deal drugs....this is what the war on drugs does. It makes it harder to get a hold of then when you get a hold of it you control the price..the harder to get the higher the price...all kinds of people you would not think deal and big time.lol

Joe won the prestine Chicago Golden Gloves several times, then went on to win "The Nationals" was a shoe in for the Olympics back in the day, until his wifes brother shot him and ended his career. Joe was seen by many as the best fighter to ever fight out of Joliet, which there were many George Blunt, Joey Roman, Aramand D'Andrea, Lance Scott, Bucky Moreno, Dale Evans and countless others who represented Joliet well in the bright lights of the ring locally and nationally. These men are indeed legendary in the Chicago boxing scene.

Jeramine is A Great Guy & was doing something POSITIVE in our community.... But I'm sure he's NOT PERFECT! Is he a killer? I'm not God, but the person I've known for the past 16 years only fights in the ring! As far as his business partner goes... He seems like he was a great guy as well. But, I don't think he was in the alley at wee hours in the morning having breakfast! They both were Obviously making a drug transaction..... And it sounds like his partner Was A Functioning Drug Addict. Neither one of them are perfect! We all make mistakes..........
It really irritates me that when people die Everyone wants to make it seem as though they were a SAINT. He may have been a Great Father & A Great Coach in the Community, but he also had another life that MANY didn't seem to know about.
My Heart goes out to his children, because he didn't deserve to die. I just pray everyone learns from this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When you live by the sword you die by the sword.

Ok Dear Clueless. First of all since when is 11pm wee hours of the morning and why couldn't Sean being outside of his business. Maybe the police should be talking to you since you know Jeramine so well you could tell them who else was involved. In fact I think Jeramine should move in right next door to you and then he could bring over his gun carrying friends over for a BBQ. You know, since he is such a great guy. In my world good guys don't plan robbies and deaths. As far as his Sean I did know him and his wasn't a double life drug addict. I don't care what he was doing there NO ONE deserves to die at the choice of someone else the way he did. Maybe all you CSI keyboards agents should keep your ASSumed theories to yourself. Both people involved have family and don't need to hear these irritating, heartless, thoughtless suggestions. But you did get one thing right you are not GOD and you should go sit on your sword!!!!!

if he was a "functioning drug addict" you think he would have recently gotten custody of his kids? i dont think so last time i checked people addicted dont usually get their kids.. but youre right apparently... and youre contradicting yourself... if he was a functioning drug addict i doubt he woul dhave been a great coach or great father so yet youre right again... youre a fucking idiot is all i have to say... sean didnt live for drugs drugs he lived for his kids and his two businesses and sports. and there were no drugs ever found so how was it a real drug deal? there was none found so it was a clear set up by someone sean trusted for many years. and it wasnt seans money jermain took off with u think he had that spare cash right after court payments and still had court payments for the custoday of his child? you should never write comments until u know the facts... wait apparently in your other posts u know all the facts after telling peopel they know shit... so again all i have to say is youre a fucking idiot.

Jermain is a Great Guy!?! Well, lets look at what we know. Now mind you this is what Jermain told the police so it must be true right? First he told the police that he came up with a plan to double cross his partner. Sounds like a great guy. Then he told the police that it wasn't him who shot Sean. No. It was these other two guys. Hmm, OK Jermain well you're a great guy so where are they? No idea? Hmm, OK but tell us what did Jermain do after the shooting? Did he stay with Sean and call an ambulance? No? He thought it'd be a better idea to leave Sean in an ally bleeding to death, go into Sean's car and take his money then go home and call it a night. Yep! That sounds like a great guy to me.

Danny,
Both of them were doing something illegall...... OBVIOUSLY! That doesn't mean that they were Bad people!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone that lives in Joliet KNOWS that being anywhere in that Vicinity is NO GOOD, Especially after 6pm. BUT that doesn't they were bad people..... AND from what I hear Jermaine stayed with him until the police arrived... You all have all the answers!!!

BAN,
You are clearly Clueless! I'm Glad you know he wasn't living a double life... But he was using or selling drugs! #FACT
Clueless, I have to assume you know NOTHING about the east side of Joliet....... There are prostitutes, drug addicts, drug dealers, robbers, killers, etc that walk that strip DAILY.... SO being out there past 6pm..... Especially In The Alley....l........................................I.....................I..............I....... God loves you;-)

It's rediculous how alot of you are talking as if you were with the deceased every minute/second of his days. it's ok to not talk bad of someone out of respect. but he or no one is going to let everyone know all their business. now see if you believe that because i bet all of you are doing things that you don't want your kids & family to know. some things you do have to take to your grave.

No he didn't deserve to die!!!!!!!!!! My heart goes out to his family! It's a foolish thing that happened & they didn't have to resort to killing him!
I also feel that the lifestyle you live can catch up to you. He trusted him & I only hope Jermaine didn't set his friend up....
But I'm not God so I don't know!
By no means did he deserve to die nor am I saying he was a bad person. We are human & we all make mistakes!

I am glad everyone here cares about both parties involved and are hurting because of some bad choices that was made by both. I can't see how bashing anyone would make you feel better. Here is what I know I know two families are hurting because of this and will have lives to live after you all are not thinking about it anymore. So let's try this let's try praying for the families that are innocent in the whole matter. Lets say something positive that can make a difference in someone's life because it's obvious both made a difference in yours since most of you are up here daily posting. I
Could have got up here and said a lot of bad stuff but what does that solve and who does that hurt. It wouldn't make me no better than them for even allowing something so foolish to happen. God is the only one that knew this would happen and that could have stopped it from happening. By no means am I saying God is at fault but what I am saying is God knows all. What you, me, Sean, or Jermaine didn't know God knew. Everyone has to answer to God for choice they made. So the choice you made to get up here and bash Sean or Jermaine you will have to answer to God for the additional hurt you caused their families. A soft answer turns away wrath and a kind word goes a long way. To the McGinn family I'm sorry for your lost and you are and will be in my prayers. For the Bennett family I know it's hard for you also and you are in my prayers as well.

Well, it's a bit different when gangbangers shoot each other ... happens all too often in inner-cities and the victims unfortunately leave their families left without fathers; however, this tragedy is different than a typical senseless gang shooting because the victim was not involved in a gang but was a good person, not evil, and he was a loving father and friend to many. His mistake was trusting the one who turned on him.

For the last 30 years people need to look at the BIG picture and the reality of the what the hell is really going on. This is been major problems since Caterpillar started out sourcing jobs and Com Ed. Joliet went bankrupt years ago and that eliminated jobs for people back in the 60's and 70's living in Joliet was ok. Then all with all of the job elimination factors, it is really another Gary Indiana and Detroit Michigan. Now it is time to wake up if you are sleep and for the young people that don't remember when this madness was created, until they revive the city it is going to be problems on top of problems, most people make their living by selling dope, It does not matter if they have a regular job in another suburb or what ever , dope is somewhere in the enviroment because dope killed Joliet back in the 80's . I have school mates that have been strung out for 25 years plus and some of their children don't even know them because Joliet has been a drug haven for so many years so as long as drugs exist heavily there. Get the hell out of town, no hope for that town it is bad news, you may as well go live in Detroit or Gary, same scum lifestyle, no escape not a good look, so say what the hell you all want but this is the deal Camille.

Hey "cluthce" "Joliet Johnny" and "Joliet" your all fucking idiots. U ha no idea who Sean was he was not a dead beat dad or a drug pusher and he co owned that gym so I believe he can be wherever the fuck he wants when he wants especially at his gym doesn't matter what fucking time it is. Just because he wasn't scared to be on the east side of Joliet like u jack asses are because u judge everything and are scared shitless man up. Sean was no where near a drug addict he owned his own business co owned a business and coached for his kids all he ever did was put his kids first. He just got custody of his kids previous to this incident and was paying for court fees so u think he had a shit ton of money? No he didn't he was using it to get his kids from his ex. Think twice don't judge u dumb asses. He was set up like articles say by his co owner. U guys need to get a clue on the person before u start talking shit. U have no idea what kind of person Sean was but guarantee he was more of a man then u guys will ever be. So shut the fuck up and get facts straight

mj no need to be do IGNORANT. It is what it is... It's a fact he was a Drug Addict or a Drug Dealer! He didn't deserve to die for the mistakes he made! God bless his soul! I'm not questioning the father his children knew.. But you obviously didn't know him or either you did & you were one of the drug addicts he supplied dope to & you want to make him out to be a saint. Your so excited that he owned that gym! The gym looked like it should have an orange sticker on it & condemned! It was filthy to say the least! Your people kill me! You like that side of town because you like prostitutes & dope, huh? That's the ONLY people that are on that strip PERIOD!!!!!!! I grew up on the east side! So shush & pray to god for forgiveness! He loves you & he is a forgiver

See what happen when you let police informers run wild on the streets. This is why I moved out of Joliet all the murders going on in Joliet is by criminals who have cooperated with the police and been released. Someone should really look into this.
