4 Arrested in Strangulation Murders; Crime Scene 'Heinous,' Chief Says

The four suspects continued to "party" after the two murders were committed, and it's believed the intent was to dismember the victims, Chief Mike Trafton said.

JOLIET, IL -- Robbery was the motive in the deaths of two men, strangled by four friends who lured them to a home Thursday, killed them and then partied and played videogames after, local police chief Mike Trafton said.

There is evidence the suspects intended to dismember their victims, Trafton said. He described the 1121 N. Hickory St. crime scene as gruesome, particularly in light of the suspects' total "disregard for human beings."

"I think you need to know this is one of the most brutal, heinous, really upsetting things that (I've seen) in 27 years of law enforcement," he said. "It is the worst thing I've come across in my career.

"After the homicides were committed, they continued the party atmosphere, I guess I would say, without getting into it any further."

The victims have been identified as Eric Glover and Terrance O. Rankins, both 22.

Charged with six counts of first-degree murder each are Adam M. Landerman, 19, 1053 Glenwood, Joliet; Bethany L. McKee, 18, 200 West Shore, Shorewood; Joshua F. Miner, 24, 601 W. Jefferson, Joliet; and Alisa R. Massaro, 18, 1121 N. Hickory St., which is where the murders took place.

Landerman is the son of Joliet Police Sgt. Julie Landerman, Trafton said.

Based on the evidence, bond was set Friday afternoon at $10 million each by Will County Judge Daniel Rozak. They are being held in the Will County jail.

Police learned about the homicides at about 4 p.m. Thursday, when they received a tip that they would find two dead bodies at the Hickory Street address. When officers arrived, they found the victims and then heard noise indicating there were other people in the house, Cmdr. Brian Benton said.

"I would say they were very much surprised (by the arrival of the police)," he said.

Landerman, Massaro and Miner were arrested there; McKee was arrested at a home in Kankakee, Trafton said.

Benton called the suspects and victims "social friends," and said the plan was to lure the two men to the house in order to rob them of cash. The victims were killed by physical strangulation; no rope or cord was used, Trafton said.

The police chief declined to discuss whether drugs or alcohol played a role in murders, and that he didn't consider it a mitigating factor even if it did.

"I refuse to use any of that as an excuse whatsoever," Trafton said. "They did what they did and they're to blame. As far as I'm concerned, they're going to jail today and they should stay there forever."

Will County prosecutors worked with police at the crime scene and later helped secure a search warrant for the house, State's Attorney James Glasgow said.

"This is a highly unusual case and were not going to be talking about any details right now, but they're quite disturbing," said Glasgow, who filed charges against the four suspects Friday afternoon.

Trafton said he revealed Officer Landerman's relationship to the suspect to ensure there would be no allegations later that the information was deliberately not disclosed or that Adam Landerman received special consideration because of his mother.

"She was spoken to me by myself," Trafton said. "She has no access to the case whatsoever, and she was afforded no luxury whatsoever."

Miner is the only suspect to have a criminal background, Trafton said.

According to jail logs, which are incomplete, he was arrested in August 2010 for residential burglary and previously in April 2008 for knowingly damaging property. When he was arrested in second case, he also had two outstanding warrants for failure to appear at other criminal proceedings, the log shows.

Look at the age of these people. They have a long time ahead of them (barring unforeseen circumstances). They'd better spend every day of it lock away from the rest of us.

@ssssskip, Your question is irrelevant and actually insulting. And to be politically correct, you should've written "single parent home". Feral animals will commit murder whether they have 1 parent or 2 parents.
I have seen kids grow up in a 'single parent home' to be fine up standing citizens as I have also seen kids from a 2 parent home grow to be complete mongrels. So therefore your question has no basis.

Ssssskip, I am a single mother who raised 4 beautiful, wonderful law abiding hard working kids. They are all raised, 3 married, and they have children. And I might add, ALL have good jobs and are homeowners. Being a single mother is a rough road however, If you instil the right morals and values it is a rewarding job. I don't find it fair to pick on single mothers in general. But my children were very involved with their father, and to this day, we all have a good relationship. It's the girls that get pregnant, and expect the state to take care of them, is the problem..Some of these babies born don't stand snowballs chance in hell, Being a single mother, is a life made of sacrafices that in my case was so well worth it.

Dear ssssskip, It matters not if they came from single mother homes! There THOUSANDS of kids in this country who come from single parent homes that DO NOT commit this kind of crime or any other crimes for that matter !I raised two son's and a daughter after my divorce and I did it alone! My oldest son is a sniper in an AirBorne Infantry Unit for 20 yrs now. My youngest son works full time as a Sgt for the Will County Sheriffs Dept and my daughter is a psychologist. They were not allowed to hang out in the streets, they had a curfew and I knew who their friends were and where they were at all times. It has nothing to do with married or single, mom or dad. It has EVERYTHING to do with how well the parents PARENT!! I think you owe the single parents out there an appology for your stupidity and ignorance!!!

I come from a single mother house hold (there were three of us...our father died young) and I was a single mother for 8 years until I married....let me tell you. That has very little to do with it. It's up to the parent (single or otherwise) to do their very best by that child. Please don't forget in the majority of the single mother cases it's the man that has decided to walk away while the mother has decided to take on the hardest job in the world. Don't take your time to write a comment that is thoughtless. These people were adults that made a decision that ended two beautiful lives. Therefore instead of looking at their house hold statistics at the moment....pray that they are not let back out into society to interact with you and the the rest of the population again.

They need to be sentenced to death. Not life in prison. Apparently these four were in the process of dismembering these two young men. The Police said is was a heinous brutal crime scene. I don't know the victims personally but I live in the next town over and I have friends who know them and this is so sick.. To think 3 young adults under the age of 21 and then a sicko with child porn can do these horrible things.... i wonder what happened like they are all hanging out and then just plan to rob the guys.. I bet the victim sold drugs.. sorry to the family but why would u rob a reg person they wont have much money on them.. but u can def lure a drug dealer over and rob them and make out pretty good too i would think...I wonder what went wrong.. How they ended up killing them... I heard some pretty sick details that aren't in the press that are just seriously "fucked" up its really really fucked up and those sick individuals need to be locked up forever! Because they knew exactly what they were doing and the actions after the murders are disgusting, not just the attempt to dismember there is more...how they could do such a sick thing is just mind blowing to me... Seriously death penalty for what they did... The fact that they could murder try to dismember, and then do the other things that happened that arent released, and just go back to partying is pretty interesting like possibly this isn't the first time they have done this... And in my eyes they can't be rehabilitated they are just Sick Fucking People!!!!

Weren't those 2 victims athletes and weren't 2 of the 4 conspirators girls. I would think those 2 victims could have easily overpowered all 4 of the conspirators, cause even the 2 male conspirators didn't look very physically imposing. I was shocked that they physically strangled both of them. Those blacks are big wimps and cowards, the 2 colored boys probably were so scared and screaming like women. Those 2 black boys were probably defecating in their pants from fear and crying like girls. Blacks scare real easy, they act all tough but are terrified of Whites. Once again the colored proves he's the White's Beeeotch forever and is not a man and will never be a man, cause if they were they would have whipped those 4 clowns butts. The cowardly effeminate black man and those 2 cowardly effeminate black boys choked 2 death, what a bunch of little bitched.

paul redzovic,

I am disgusted with the crimes committed, but even more disgusted that there are people like you who have the nerve to blame the victims. How racist can you be..... Blacks scare more that whites, calling them wimps and cowards and insinuating that whites are Superior, who do you think you are... I am as white as they come, but my heart goes out to the victims and there families here. Skin color has nothing to do with it. White or black, murder is wrong and a victim is a victim. As you sit there and bash these poor victims for the color of their skin, you failed to mention that the sick individuals who took these men's lives, and engaged in sexual act atop their corpses were white. They are the coward, wimps and, as you said about the victims, will be "so scared and screaming like women, defecating in their pants from fear and crying like girls" when they realize their lives will be spent staring at bars and they have become the jail house "bitches". To end this post I would like to say that everyone, black, white, big or small, we are all capable of good, bad and evil. We are all equal and deserve to be treated as such. When hurt we all bleed RED, a victim is a victim regardless of the color of their skin. Your mind seems just as corrupt as the people who orchestrated this crime. Makes me sick to my stomach knowing there are still people out there who don't realize we are ONE RACE.... Human......

When the States Attorney files charges, there are multiple statutes that may apply to the crime. In most cases, the States Attorney will file an allegation according to each statute that applies. For example, if I punch someone on a sidewalk, I can be charged with Battery, a misdemeanor, for making contact of an insulting and provoking nature. Plus I can be charged with Aggravated Battery because I punched this person "on a public way." So, with this case, there are multiple statues that apply to the way the murders occurred. That is why there are multiple charges for each act. Does this make sense?

When there are multiple acts that would have taken the life of a victim then there are multiple charges of the same crime...i.e. shooting someone two times - thus two counts of agg asslt w/weapon or murder if he dies

@clutche that is why they put that s**t in the paper. So people like you would repeat s**t like that. They were murdered then cut open and from what I'm hearing it gets worse than that. Why not look up the stuff you'll see on Josh. I wish Eric had a weapon on him to defend himself. I think it may even be illegal to carry a knife after that. You have no idea how many times the police stopped me and I had more than one knife on myself. They ask why do I have so many. Just in case something happens and I drop it or it gets taken from me, I'll have the opportunity to grab the 2nd or 3rd. Joliet is rough depending on where you are. Not everybody has the same things going in their lives, or sometimes you get threatened for no reason, or jumped, or you were just born on the wrong street. You cannot tell a damn thing from one report about something. I went to a school and it was hell every day. My husband told me he didn't know how I made it thru because he is black and it was hell for him. If I was like I am now way back then, things would have went very bad for me and my family. And the marijuana possession, um, like 90% of the world smokes weed, so don't judge the story by one newspaper reporter who will post stuff about black people and not the full story on white people. Did you see josh's child pornography charges? Did you read what he did to his old girlfriends? How he beat one into miscarriage 3 times? Look stuff up before you take a bias reporter's word. The plot thickens.

And I didn't see them put anything about being harassed, just treated the same, ie no leniency. They didn't put anything about themselves being involved in anything. What is wrong with you? Sorry to say but the murderers families should also too be in prayers. They have to live with the rest of their lives knowing their son/daughter is a killer. I know this because I am married in to the family of one of the culprits and already retaliation is occurring. The ones to blame are the ones who killed these innocent men. I have no remorse and no respect to the related family member of mine but just because the last name is the same doesn't mean you blame the WHOLE family. And all have to understand that there are 4 people who are "suspected", before you can go ahead and start pointing fingers wait until they say whom exactly committed the murders. If it is all four of them good they all need to rot, but if people decide to not even investigate thoroughly an innocent person who could've been at the wrong place and wrong time could be wrongfully sent to prison. Again my heart, soul, prayers, and love go out to the families of the victims and also to the families of the murderers. May Eric and Terrence RIP

I do believe its wrong to retailiate against the family but all 4 of these suspects do not need a free pass. They all had something to do with it. So it serves them right to all be sentenced equally. The four will point the fingers at each other so the truth will never come out. Honestly they need to be sentenced to life in prison. But we all know how that works. Just think these young men were black and if it was them whom committed the crime what would have happened? I sure cannot wait to see. My prayers are with everyone at this time.

I am not a child and I also heard the unreleased info about male and female bodily fluids found on the victim, which point towards them having sex on the victim after death... This was from an official source that cannot be named... Considering the severity of the crime and the actions the proceeded it, these young adults should be given at least life in prison, the fact that they could just continue to go about their day is sick. Throw in dismemberment and sex acts on top of the dead bodies and it's like we are in some sick horror movie that I don't want to I watch anymore.. Wtf is wrong with people these days

Having been charged with some crime before does not give some low life the right to murder. This is so sad to me these men have been taken away from family and friends and their bodies disrespected, as far as not knowing who actually did the killing they are all guilty of partying in a house with bodies instead of notifying the police.

Seems so far no one has mentioned the obvious. Nobody ever wants to bring into light what this and similar crimes really are. Based on available information this appears to have been a Satanic ritual sacrifice/murder. These “kids” are devil worshipers. Most believe this only happens in movies. Unfortunately, crimes of this nature are more common than thought. Rarely mentioned by police is any link to devil worship. Apparently they don’t take Satanic worship seriously as to the “why?” They should.

Obviously Miss big booty you are just running your mouth. Julie is a wonderful person and a great parent. Her son made a bad choice, not her. We are all given a free will...no mater how well we raise our children, they will still make their own choices. We just have to pray that they will make good choices, not life damaging choices.

This is a time when parents should be talking to their children about choices and what happens when you make bad choices. Unfortunately four individuals made bad choices and now their families are affected as well. We need to pray for all the families.

We need to pray for our nation too. America is filled with individuals that have no regard to life. Eric and Terrance were children of God. We mourn for the loss of life and share in their families grief. But how many of us would not have batted an eye if 22 years ago if they were aborted. We are teaching our children to be murders and have no regard for life every time we turn a blind eye to abortion.

We need to ask ourselves, what can I do to make this society better. Rather that blame others, let's look at ourselves and take responsibility. When we see troubled teens in the street strike up a conversation and let them know they are loved instead of casting down judgement.

We cannot turn back the hands of time, but we can change the future. Let's stop looking down at others and show love and compassion. "he that is without sin, cast the first stone"!

@Formereastside how do you know that? If that is true, then her being a police officer, should have had her be more strict and sent his ass to boot camp instead of dropping a load on her parents. Being a police officer has got to be tough. Especially since they work so much and so many hours. It would not be easy to raise kids if she were alone, not saying she is, or was, I do not know them at all.

Hey valb you need to shut the fuck up with that bull shit. Just because people are jack asses does not mean that they are kkk or from a trailer park. Most of the time it's the rich ones that look down on the lower income people, or have you not stepped out of the hood lately? Going to school online does not make you educated. You truly sound uneducated.
But also to you again, you might want to read the hateful stuff that clutche puts up here. Maybe he is the same person, with about 4 profiles, because the more that I read, the more that he, and a whole bunch of people all sound the same. Then again, small minds think alike. People really need to be able to speak more properly, on both sides of this issue. It's really stupid how people think, and cannot form correct sentences. I can agree that these people on here make it seem that everybody from Joliet are either project trash or trailer trash, but still, I dare any of you to step out in public and say these things to another person's face. I bet it would not happen.

ssssskip, where are you getting your stats from? I'm just curious. Also, are you saying that all single mothers are single mothers because they "decided their children didn't need" their father, regardless of context? In any case, just from one of the articles I read, they quoted Alisa's father, meaning she has one around. So your stats are off in this situation, even if they're technically only being held currently. We have people commenting blaming video games and insane clown posse, and while none of us here are actually experts on this event or the people involved, or even psychology in general, I find it even more silly to boil this all down to single mothers.

Keep reading, and maybe go watch the trial in person as it unfolds, so maybe before you keep talking shit behind your anonymity, you'll realize that blaming the fucking victims is not such a correct way to look at it. Maybe something like this will happen to your stupid ass one day so that when you're dying you can look back on this conversation and say to yourself, "Damn, now I understand," right before it fades to black. Hate crime, yeah, ya think?! People also deny the obvious, that some video games are really evil, and I think dull the morals of already messed up people. My God, there had to be a whole heck of a lot of bad stuff and warning signs going off in their lives for a long time for this to happen. Really too bad no one saw it coming, or if so, did nothing about it. Just like the Columbine killers, or "Spiderman"Holmes or Eric whoever in Sandy Hook. What they put in their perverted little brains over and over and over will eventually come out, some worse than others---who knows? It's like Russian Roulette with these kids. Who's next? Time for us to be more vigilant (starting with us parents), and remove some very evil video games from the stores and our homes, and let's see America's values restored with the Ten Commandments and prayer brought back into the schools, and less "political correctness". It has not worked.

Yes! Take out the violent video games (which every major country has, except Australia) and plug in the Ten Commandments. Teach the children of the one who murdered the first born of every home that didn't slaughter an animal and smear it's blood over their doors.

You do realize that the bible has just as much violence as almost all video games right? And much of it is so much more disturbing.

People were killing mutilating bodies, chopping them up,burning them,...way way before the video games and music every one likes to blame...look how many generations grew up playing video games..some are millionaires, some are junkies, some are just people who work go home and play video games with their kids who get great grades, very smart,..well educated and more mature..why? Becaus while your sitting there playing video games you get to talk to your child and get to know what they are thinking...sports? Your not sitting there with your kids their busy playing sports while your watching and in the end it is about winning or losing the sport...talking and education...with learning how your kid thinks is what it is all about...and even then no parent can be sure that their kids will do right...because in the end we are our own selves..and we make our own decisions...no matter who our parents are...

@ J. Ann Millions, and millions of video games are sold to, and played by kids of all ages every year, and 99.999999999% of those NEVER commit crimes, especially a crime as brutal as this. Now you want to put the Old Testament back in school? Maybe you should think about this, look at two of these kids Facebook pages, they are both claiming Jesus as their savior. Look up at the loon trying to link this to Satanism, look at how many crimes are committed by people believing they are doing the lords work, and the lord is telling them to do this. It's awful hard to say they are not hearing the lord when the founder of Monotheism, Abraham is revered for hearing god tell him to take his son up to a mountain, and kill him for god. All this shows you is that religion poisons the mind. "That which is claimed without evidence can be dismissed without evidence"---Christopher Hitchens.

They will spam the same things over and over and over again and then..... when they get called out on absolutely everything they say as being illogical, hypocritical and such, they just say you have to have faith and you can just go to hell. It really is sad. I love to have conversations with my personal friends about religion, but for whatever reason, if it's someone you don't personally know or someone on-line, it's impossible to discuss.

There is some pretty weird stuff being posted here! A racist spouting off, some strange computer dialect and a lot of talk about grammar. There might be a joke in all this (a racist, a computer geek and a teacher walk into a bar... ), but it isn't funny. Can we not all just hope that justice is harshly meted out to these thugs and offer sincere condolences to the families of the victims without taking complete leave of our senses?

I am so sick of people trying to make sense of what these hillbillies did. They are worthless pieces of rotten garbage. All they know is how to cheat, rob and kill. Getting a job wouldve been a better choice. Their parents are to blame too. What parent doesnt wonder where their scabby trash children are for days at a time? The other chick had a baby that she left for days and it wasn't a red flag to the parents are(equally pieces of rotted and putrid garbage)? They are no count losers, especially the seargent that spends her time bossing others around when she can control her own piece of trash child.

Wow Clutche, " find religion as well"? Because finding religion has lead to a model of civility in this world? I am shocked, and appalled at the number of ignorant people offering prayers, as if that does anything. Two hands with hammer, and nail will always do more than a thousand hands clasped in prayer. Maybe if the world stopped believing in ignorant tales of sheep herders we could finally move towards a society of logic, and reason.

God bless those two men who were so brutally murdered. I grew up in that neighborhood almost 50 years ago, and it was a wonderful and safe place. I can't believe how it has changed. It just breaks my heart. I have read most of the postings, and I can't believe how some of you are attacking each other. A situation such as this brings people together in a discussion of societal issues. Things such as single parents, violence, mental illness, drugs, unemployment and poverty are big issues of discussion and should be talked about. We can feel anger and call for the death penalty, but as far as I know no one here is God. It will be up to Him as to their ultimate fate. From the looks of the conversations here we all share one common feeling and that is sadness for all the innocent people involved. You can go around blaming everyone for something, or just look in the mirror and try to fix what you see. God bless you all. P.S. If there are any words spelled incorrectly I apologize in advance.

My prayer is for the family who lost there love one. God don't care what they done. He except them just the way they are if they just receive him. The neighborhood hasn't changed, society has. I don't know where you live, but don't be fooled, this could happen in any neighborhood.

As far as "things like this brings people together" that's naivete. Natural disasters bring people together, crime divides especially when different races are involved. The blame game and attacking othersit is a defensive human response to unimaginable acts that are impossible to comprehend. They point fingers and attack others or blame it on societal issues in search of answers to why a fellow human being can be so evil.

And what does calling for the death penalty or life in prison have to do with God? Ultimately, most believe that their fate will be decided by a higher being, but in the meantime there must be severe consequence for their actions don't you agree?

The streets are bigger than the parents influences. I will be watching this story closely and I pray for the judgement and preconceived ideas about what happend and how involved who was will slow. It is shocking, it is awful but it is hurtful to sling hate around. I know the good and bad of Joliet well and it is so easy for someone to fall into a bunch of trouble around there. From an early age I think we should all teach our kids to not trust so easy or just go anywhere or into any situation so easily. I pray those that deserve it get the charges and time they deserve.

Thats is whenever ur not correcting someone elses grammar to make yourself feel somehow more enlightend than the next person, but anyone with any common sense can see u thrive off trolling these comments and interjecting your bigotist comments and getting a reaction seems to thrill u, which is your entitlement i guess. But U need to understand its not needed and it shows your arrogance because u can hide behind an online persona but u will never repeat what u say in person to any of these family members on ANY of the posts u have ever written, not just about this particular case.Obviously most people can tell what race u are by your comments, and i would like to know honestly what is or was your point about bringing up Erics past and the company he kept the last night of his life. Do u really think he knew by stepping into that house that there was a danger of his life being lost? Its called having faith and trusting in someone, and sometimes that can and will be your downfall, but U are not the one to judge.Think about what u say b4 u say it, your words can affect a multitude Sir

I certainly respect your opinion and I hope your beliefs are never put to the test by a random crime. And I'm not the one who brought up ethnicity, but I did respond with FBI facts about the volume of crimes committed by race in response to her biased comments.

And, no, I'm not a thrill seeker and I have never once believed that I was entitled to anything. I'm a law-abiding, hard-working, tax-paying citizen who contributes to society unlike some of the people involved with this crime.

As to a person's past and the company they keep; my point was if you hang around with bad people, put yourself in bad situations, bad things will happen. And why he would put trust and faith in those four known drug users is a mystery, but at his age he should have known better.

I always think before I speak, but I'm a straight shooter and don't sugar-coat the facts which obviously upsets you and others that aren't in touch with reality.

Clutche, you said that situations like this don't bring people together, but by what I am seeing here there is a group of individuals in a common forum discussing an issue and voicing an opinion. I am very much aware that "bad" things can happen anywhere. I am not blind to this fact. When you bring up th issue of the death penalty it is not up to us. Yes, I know this is an unthinkable act, but it is not for us to put someone to death. Don't even say that I would feel differently if it were my own family. Yes, I would be angry beyond comprehension, but I am a practicing Catholic who follows the teachings of the Catholic Church. Oh, and by the way you had better check the windows in your glass house. You may have some windows that need cleaning.

Technically you're right. This is a forum and by it's nature brings people together for discussion. But the subject in this particular forum, alleged murder; victims, perpetrators, violent nature, drugs, poverty, single parents, mental illness, race and punishment are lightning rods that divide not unite.

And your snide glass house remark is a prime example of how a discussion of this sort can prompt a devote Catholic to make judgements about those he/she doesn't even know.

And I don't think you, I or anyone else can say with certainty how we would react if it was our own child that was murdered. The only thing for sure is that your faith would be put to the ultimate test.

So only one of the suspects has a criminal record. Maybe becaue he is 24 years old and the others are 18 and 19, so of course there's no record of previous arrests, because they were minors till now. So their juvenile records are not available. I'd bet that's why they have no "criminal records". Not noting this possibility is negligent journalism.

One poster mentioned a past arrest of one of the victims for carrying a weapon. Too bad they took it away because he could have used it. As to the child of the suspect, I believe this terrible tragedy may have been the best thing that happened to that child. You are very unaware of the extent the family went to to help their child with a mental illness. Many things were done to help. Please understand that once a person is no longer a minor they can take themselves off medication or refuse to seek help of any professionals. I wish there was more that can be done to help anyone with a mental illness unfortunately there isn't. At a certain point it is out of the parents hands.

Considering you've had past interaction with Sgt. Julie......is it safe to say that you are an upstanding citizen? I read your comments and can "assume" that having personal dealings with a police officer would cause a person who doesn't know you, or your background or private life, to just jump to the conclusion that you have broken a law. Can I then assume that your parents are horrible? Did they raise you in ignorance to your every move? Did they not invade your privacy and scrutinize every possible thing you said, acted on or the people you associated with outside of the home?
Can't we just focus on the people who are directly responsible for what's going on? Can't we just show sympathy for ALL of the families? Two families have to bury their children and four families are dealing with having children who may have done something that they could never believe they would or could be capable of doing.
It seems you have a personal problem that should've been dealt with at the time of the occurrence, not trying to kick someone when they're down.

The way they were raised or their parents occupation is all meaningless in the grand scheme of things. These 4 young adults have ruined their lives and horribly taken the lives of 2 other young men. My heart hurts for all the families invloved. Horrible, tragic, unspeakable things happen and you cannot blame the parents. Everyone is capable of making their own decisions. I know one of the suspects was raised in a home full of love, rules, chores, family, caring and discipline. The suspect has a Family full of people who loved them. The suspect helped family members, took care of the ones in need, and cared for all of them.

If they did something of this magnitude when they're grown....then I'd do some reflection but I would ABSOLUTELY not take responsibility for their actions. I would feel great pain for the victims families. Has anyone scrutinized the other accused families? Nope. Why would they? What if one of them was a felon or on welfare or a drug addict. Would we be saying "Oh, we'll it figures the kid would turn out like this."?
What about the children of abuse? If they commit a crime should we just say...."The parents made them do it?"
Where's accountability and ownership for ones OWN actions??

Unfortunatly, lives were lost for for a few dollars. The victim's family's and the accused family's are affected. However, because of our wonderful judicial system (NOT!), the accused expenses will be payed for by law abiding, tax paying citizens. The victims court costs and funeral expenses will not. What is wrong with this country? The accused, if found guilty, will have a roof over their head, 3 meals a day and a chance at a college education. The victim's family's will be more in debt and heartache. Politicians wake up and stop being such criminals yourselfs!

Parents can only guide and pray their children grow up to be productive and respectable citizens. Yes, they can be a positive role model but there is also personal responsibility!

A major problem with our society today; we seem to ‘blame’ others for our decisions and actions. These young adults were all over the age of 18 stop blaming the parents.

If we feel we need to blame someone or something why don’t we blame:
1. The film makers who create some of the most violent despicable movies?
2. The video game makers who create such violent games?
3. The media that seems to only report such violence. I can’t remember the last time I saw something positive come out of the media. Violence and sex seem to sell and their in it for the money!

Why do people go see these types of movies and play such violent games? If no one went to those types of movies or played those games, they wouldn’t make them.

As a society we need to focus more on moral values through our churches (which ever faith you are).
If you’re not religious, as a Master once told us in my martial arts training meditate and reflect on how you as an individual could make the world a better place to live.

In my opinion, we have become a self-centered society that wants to live for the moment. And that is a major problem and could be the reason such violent crimes are on the rise!

These senseless, evil murders are added to the long lists that already exist. So sad. I hope that the people responsible for these murders will be punished and put away for the rest of their lives so they can't do harm to any other people.

I honor my parents love and wisdom for teaching us three children how to be good, decent, caring, respectful loving people and good citizens. None of the three of us in our childhood family ever got in to trouble with others or the law. We are productive and caring citizens of USA. We pay our bills and taxes on time. We help ourselves, our families and others. We don't make troubles for our families or neighbors. We go to our churches and donate as we are able. My brother was in the US Navy for nearly 40 years, coming out with honors. We all have been hard workers, always supporting our selves and our families. I am thankful for my two good parents who taught us right from wrong, good from bad and how to get along in this world without harming others. So many of these problemed people who commit these horrendious crimes, either were not taught good, or they were taught it, but they did not follow that path - they chose another. And sadly, some chidren were not taught about the good that exists, they did not have good teachers, guardians or maybe parents. What was on their marjiuana and alcohol clouded minds?.

However, if these four are convicted I’m assuming they will be going to a maximum prison based on the seriousness of their crime. In a maximum prison like Statesville there were no educational benefits. At least that I was aware of.
Our goal was to ensure they did not escape, kill each other or one of us. Glad, I ended up leaving and pursued an advanced education because that place was as close to hell as you could get.

I wasn't talking about religion, but a relationship with a loving God. Religion, with all its rules is empty if there is no relationship with the Father. As for the effects of videos, I did make note that not everyone is affected as extremely as these young people, but some videos are EXTREMELY violent, and since young minds don't finish developing until 25 yrs of age, they are easily messed with. I noticed Landerman had "Grand Larceny Theft" as one of his favorite videos. Wonder how it affected him? Just a thought...but yes, sure, there are other factors involved. Nevertheless, a messed up MIND makes for a messed up kid. As for the Ten Commandments being reinstated into the government schools, I have read the Bible through a few times and I think "Thou shalt not murder" is a pretty good thought to be stressed in school---it transcends both Old and New Testaments. All they learn now is they are somehow descended from an animal--yes, we're all glorified animals or something---so why not kill? What's our real value? That's how lots of kids today think, for real! By the way, the Old Testament is nothing but the New Testament CONCEALED, and the New Testament is simply the Old Testament REVEALED. It is ALL the INSPIRED Word of God. I like that. Ya gotta read the whole thing a few times with the Holy Spirit's help to get it, but it's worth the effort. Just don't be quoting a few verses or thoughts out of context or without reading the whole Word--it doesn't fly.

Oh J. Ann you make this so easy, and I will not use quotes from the Bible out of context, it's believers that like to cherry pick the nice parts, while ignoring the depravity. You apparently missed most of the Old Testament because "thou shall not murder" does NOT apply of you are doing it in the name of that very god that gave Moses the 10 Commandments. That is the same god that orders Moses, and the Israelites to kill all the Midianite male children and "... every woman who has known man ...." Have a look at the history of the world and look at the amount of killing, and forced conversions that have been committed in the name of that god, and all because someone said, "go forth and baptize all nations". This wasn't taken as just a mere request, this gave men license to use the sword, and gun to slaughter their way to the top of the religious charts if you will. "Ya gotta read the whole thing a few times with the HOLY SPIRIT", priceless, so you're saying before I read it I have to already believe it's claims. Do you know what circular logic is? But don't worry J. Ann if you want to know about the religious texts, or their history, ask an atheist, we usually know it better.

J.Ann,
So it's the school's responsibility to teach students morals and values as well as give them an academic education? Why do we even need parents except to gestate our young? Public schools feed children when their parents cannot, give them counseling when their parents do not, provide after school care when parents are not around, and provide transportation. Just because these people were legally adults does not mean they were not influenced by their upbringing.

Hi S---I went to Catholic schools through elementary and most of high school; we had "religion"class, and we were free to pray and the Ten Commandments were not taboo, nor was anything about God. Catholic (and other Christian) schools also feed children, transport them when needed, give them counseling, provide after school care, etc. Why oh why remove God? Has it helped? Of course the parents have the ultimate responsibility of moral and world-view training, but it's nice for the schools to reinforce it, isn't it? I'm an educated person, with a bachelor's degree---in science! But I don't buy the evolution junk or the anti-God stuff. We have to think for ourselves, and not let the radical anti-God agenda in the public schools define us, or our children. And that will happen unless we get radical ourselves and make sure they have a good Christian, God-fearing upbringing. Parenting is a full time job, for sure, and we have to be vigilant. If they fail, at least we know we did our best. Peer pressure is so intense, it's difficult for them to resist unless they have a strong sense of their intrinsic value as HUMAN BEINGS created in God's image, and not mere animals on a food chain. That's what we, and the schools need to be teaching them---respect for LIFE.

It is always the parents job to bring the child up in a moral fashion. But when divorce is at the door step of almost 50% of this nations people, a child has little chance. There are many latch key children that stay at home alone while one or both parents work to survive in a reasonable fashion. The break down of society can be traced to the financial institutions of this nation and a political body sleeping in bed with the money. Until America fixes the national debt owed to the private federal reserve cartels, America will continue to spiral downward. It going to take much more than the bible to free us from bondage, unless one understands it in proper perspective.

The love of money (politicians) and (national debt) is the root, of, all evil.

Ok Glock'n idiot my turn. Bad people are bad, money is only a tool (much like you) that can be used to make their bad intentions possible. Many people love money, and success, working very hard to achieve those thing. So your comment "when money becomes the god you worship, you will do immoral things to acquire it" is plain stupid. How many people that love success, and money take that money and use it for philanthropic ventures to benefit their fellow man. I see the church has drilled the old tired line "it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to make it into heaven" into your head quite well.
Now as for the New Testament. Shall we examine the morals of the NT shall we?
Romans 1 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. Not very nice!
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. Ephesians 6 I doubt you disagree with this though. Shall I continue?

I have read the Bible, from cover to cover several times. As Mark Twain said, "It's not the parts of the Bible I don't understand that disturb me, it's the parts that I do understand". By the way, pointing out the contradictory nature of the Bible does nothing to bolster your argument, it only shows how poorly man made it is.
I have an idea that goes along with your idiotic claim about money. I will go to work, and make that evil money that I love so much. And, this is awesome...."My Glock is my protection from the evil that walks this earth." So you insist the world needs to follow your version of the peace, and love, "turn the other cheek" Jesus New Testament while you follow the vengeful, violent "eye for an eye" Old Testament.....HYPOCRITE!!! Admit it, you've never read the whole thing, have you?

So by revealing Officer Landerman's relationship to the suspect to ensure there would be no allegations later that the information was deliberately not disclosed or that Adam Landerman received special consideration because of his mother didn't Trafton take it too far the other way? Why not list what everybody's parents do for a living then? As long as you have faith in your personnel and know the incident will be handled properly and without prejudice F*CK what the public perceives. Otherwise turn it over to the County or State. Too many double standards!

robbery?? things not adding up! it is obvious that it was premeditated. i don't believe they tried to rob them. i believe that is what they are telling us to cover up the true. im just saying its not adding up. i live down the street from where this heinous crime occurred and im just now heard of what happened. my condolences go out to the families of the deceased. i believe the parents do have fault in how there adult children are. my mother never beat me but i would never do anything close to this cuz she brought me up to respect myself and others. just think about every decision you make, how you comb your hair, what you eat and etc is based on how your parents or guardians brought you. just think about it

Yeah....time for "Springfield" to do some house cleaning and for the voters to get someone in Office that will have the balls to bring back the death penalty to Illinois! I do not want to have to pay for another 4 people to live off of my hard work.

I live in Los Angeles and just stumbled on this story...WOW! I figured we had it bad over here but this has topped the cake. I do have a lot of questions but I'll wait for the story to break over here as I'm sure it will be in full swing.

It speaks of the two vctims being lured.... I'm assuming everyone knew each other so thye probably didn't suspect a thing. All I have to say is my heart goes out to all of the families because this tragic "life taking" will forever affect many many families in the iL area.

I just hope the family doean't claim revenge or the scene in Chicago could become quite ugly. We are waiting to hear the outcome over here in L.A.

First I would like to send heartfelt prayers to the parents of all whose lives are forever affected by this horrific, senseless tragedy. Secondly why isn't this story still being talked about in the news, nancy grace, why isn't al sharpton and the rest of the crew all over this story??????? It is definitely clear these kids were not friends to those young men. truly there is a mental challenge in all of these teens jail is a joke to them because mentally they are already there. Jail isn't good for anyone but those who want to line their pockets the best criminals are in the prison system money should be spent on ficing the mental health care system if not unfortunately we will see more of this

I happened upon this forum. My name's gio, from south africa. I'm 16 ;)

I think you're all acting very childish. You're trying to use such a gruesome act of explicit inhumanity to further your own ideas and beliefs. It's disgusting. I too am an atheist for multiple reasons. Yes religion has been the cause of most evil in the world, but not this evil. Who cares what religion these people are? They have the choice whether to act on their faith or not.

I find it despicable that any of you blame parents. The parents are not to blame. I am only 16 but if I go outside and kill someone, my mother is not to blame. As a parent, you can instill values into your child. You can convey morals to your child. At the end of the day, the CHILD CHOOSES to adhere to those teachings. You can be the most God fearing person or a humanitarian atheist, but if you have a child, there is no guarantee that will turn out to be anything like you. Being a single parent, no matter what your gender, is emotionally taxing and physically draining. You've got to make sacrifices constantly and when things go south for you, there's no one to lean on. It's sad and unrewarding. The least people could is respect single parents for taking responsibility when they could have just washed their hands of their kids. And single parent does not equal fornication. My mom was married when she had my sister and I. She is a great mother and a good woman.

Gio, you say "Yes religion has been the cause of most evil in the world" so casually. I trust you have solid evidence to trust this claim. It is funny how atheists so easily dismiss Christianity; I pray that you have an awakening at some point in your life. Maybe when you grow up, you will see the Light. Until then, enjoy the darkiness.
Are all teenagers from South Africa as pompous and arrogant as you are? Just wondering.

He's not pompous and arrogant at all; he's educated and it shows. It's a shame that in America we're so hellbent on religion being the only source of salvation that we see people who are not religious as pompous and arrogant when they state their beliefs. Salvation is not something that needs to be in the after life, it is attainable by being a genuinely good person and you do not need any book or religion to be a good person. Grow up, Average Joe.

Average Joe I would love to give you your "solid evidence" for religion causing the most evil in the wold but The Patch limits me to 1500 words, and it would take much more than that to list all of it. You are free to visit any public library, I hear they have these things called books, and in those books are the history of most of civilization. We would know a lot more had Christians not burned the Library at Alexandria in 391 ad, and labeled, by decree of the Pope, anything other than Christian literature as heresy. Then it lead is into a wonderful time called the Dark Ages.

Salvation is NOT attainable by "being a genuinely good person." You must watch too much Oprah or something. And you telling me to grow up is laughable..I pray for your soul.

No need to pray for my soul, it's perfectly fine. I'm sure your god would be ecstatic that you didn't believe salvation was attainable by being a good person. You're typical and that's a shame. Try getting outside the herd of sheep and see what happens.

Jesus said "there is only One good, and that's God". We just can't be "good" on our own; we always fall short. Human nature tends toward pride, selfishness, and all manner of sin. The Bible says if you're going to depend on your (good) works for salvation, you better keep the WHOLE law, perfectly. That is not attainable. There's only One who is good---GOD. Just look at what He did for us miserable sinners--sent His perfect, sinless Son to die for us, while we were still sinners. From the readings of most of these posts, we would not do that. We're not "good" without Him.
Furthermore, for you critics of the Bible, that Word is inspired by the Holy Spirit, and it is written as a love letter to us, a message from God's heart. We cannot understand the HEART of the Scriptures unless we have the author of the Scriptures living on the inside and enlightening us. Even then, it'll take a lifetime and then eternity to begin to understand it, it's just too deep for our human minds to fathom. Be that as it may, it's a joy and a privilege to be given the opportunity to start that journey. But no one can understand the mind of God except the Spirit of God---so we need to get the Spirit first by trusting Jesus. By wary where there's cynicism, offense, criticism and judgment regarding the Bible---that betrays a mere human spirit trying to reason and understand a God-inspired Word, and that is impossible. It's a twisted lie. So much hate.

J. Ann are you serious? Jesus has caused the most depraved acts in human history. Read about the Inquisition, or the Mallaeus Maleficarum, to see what Jesus' most beloved followers have done in his name. Or look at the Popes, and what they have done. Look at Pope John Paul, and that evil Mother Theresa, they are responsible for the deaths on millions of Africans for preaching, "sure AIDS is bad, but using a condom is an unforgivable sin". As for the Bible, we understand it just fine. Jesus of the Bible is a mythical invention, and all of the instance will never make him real.

No, rabid atheist, Jesus is not the cause of any depraved acts in history. Of course since you think He's a mythical character, how you can even believe that is beyond me....anyway, we all have free wills to choose what we will put our time and focus on; and we also have a resident sinful nature, and then there's all the evil forces in the world influencing people and confusing and twisting and accusing and distorting and sometimes ultimately MURDERING, and there, we've come full circle. These murders were a multi-faceted product of their own twisted minds, and their evil inclinations resulting from tons of evil they put in their minds over and over in the form of music, videos, and other things such as wrong associations and relationships. There's no vacuum in the mind---it's good or evil, and what we put in consistently will affect us, and some will act on it. You feed the "bad dog" or the "good dog". We either use the gift of free will to choose life in all it's forms--love, kindness, goodwill, or we begin to choose hate, vengeance and evil-- maybe because we were abused or rejected or neglected---but we still have a choice, to become bitter or better. They will have to pay for their wrong decisions, but Jesus is all good and exhorts us to choose LIFE. You greatly misunderstand and therefore misrepresent what true faith in a loving God is all about, and rather love to hear yourself talk.

Did we forget what the headline is? Why bother bickering back and forth, move on, go to a chat room. Leave this for those that would like to get/ give information on theses families.
This is no place for your religious beliefs. Everyone has their own, don't let anyone demean yours, keep your head up. Fighting back and forth does not make either of you correct.; it actually shows that each need to practice what they preach.

J. Ann, I am a Christian as well. Just saying; our faiths are our own beliefs. This is a headline about four very troubled children that chose to murder two innocent boys. I have no ties to any of them but am glad they are behind iron bars and I feel awful for the six families involved. Such a mortal sin! Sometimes comments are so rude to one another, such as yours, to me.

J. Ann I can't help but wonder if you believers read the words you write before you hit send. Whether, I think, or as history shows the Jesus of the Bible is a mythical character is irrelevant. The people all throughout history that have believed him to be very real, also taking his commandment to "go forth, and baptize all nations" very serious, and used the sword, or the gun to do it. As for free will, you apparently just sit in a church, and let others tell you what they want you to believe the Bible says. You really should read it for yourself from time, to time, it's the easiest way to not believe it. There is NO SUCH THING as free will in the Bible, it's all part of god's plan. Read the Book of Isaiah, it's a tirade by god taking credit for everything. He even says, "I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things". So please if you are going to try and tell me I don't understand it, you probably should understand it yourself.
