Woman Knocked Out in Fight, Man in Jail: Police
Keon Kelly reportedly got caught up in a fight between his former and current girlfriends; another man used a bottle of Remy Martin to end it, Joliet police say.
It started as a fight between two women over a man, Joliet Police Cmdr. Rich Demick said.
When the man at the center of the dispute jumped into the fray, the tumult escalated and rolled outside, Demick said. Add another man armed with a bottle of cognac, and you head into felony territory.
The fight went down on Nov. 20 at 14 Iowa Ave. when Keon Durell Kelly's ex-girlfriend got into a verbal altercation with Kelly's current girlfriend, Demick said. The confrontation between the two 26-year-old women turned physical, and Kelly managed to pull the former girlfriend off his new one, he said.
Instead of trying to clam the two women, however, witnesses say he opted to attack his former girlfriend instead, punching her in the head and moving the dispute outdoors, Demick said.
Enter Jemalle Barfield, who used a bottle of Remy Martin to slam the woman over the head and render her unconscious, he said. For good measure, he then punched her in the head one last time when she was on the ground, Demick said.
The unconscious woman was transported to Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.
Kelly, 29, of 3520 S. State St., Lockport, was arrested Dec. 11 on a warrant charging him with aggravated battery. He was also booked on charges of obstructing/resisting a peace officer for trying to flee arrest and with possession of cannabis, when officers found 3.5 ounces of pot in his pocket, Demick said.
A warrant has also been issued for Barfield, who remains at large, he said.
Kelly's being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond. According to Will County Circuit Clerk records, Kelly has an adult criminal record going back to 2000 and includes such charges as aggravated battery, aggravated assault, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated driving under the influence and failure to register as a sex offender.
