Accidental Gunshot Victim Dead: Coroner

Man who shot himself in the face while showing a gun to friends died Saturday at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center, the Will County coroner's office said.

A 21-year-old Joliet man who accidentally shot himself in the face died Saturday night in Provena St. Joseph Medical Center's intensive care unit, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.

Dion D. Perry sustained the injury at about 5 p.m. Friday night in the 300 block of South Ottawa Street, the hospital reported Friday. There had been some confusion that the shooting may have occurred at the hospital, but those accounts were incorrect.

He was reportedly showing the gun to friends while sitting in a car when the .25-caliber Beretta went off, according to a Joliet Herald News article.

My heart goes out to his family. This is why gun safety is so important. If he was just showing his friends the gun, he should have made sure it was unloaded and that no bullet was left in the chamber. But I don't understand why he was showing the gun inside of the car vs. inside of the house.

My question is was he legally allowed to own a firearm? Did he have a FOID card? Why was he playing with a loaded gun in a car, this in itself was illegal. gangbanger?
we'll probably never know, the media likes to hide the facts.

I doubt very much that this gun was going to be used for anything but to kill another person or it would'nt have been in the car.For once an innocent person didn't die because of reckless behavior

What in the world would 4 people in a car with a loaded gun be up to? My guess is that they probably were on their way to a babysitting job.......

I want to know who the gun was registered to, and what the criminal history is of all the people in the car. I would guess it is a safe bet that a crime was prevented by this accidental shooting. If so, this is actually a good thing.

Why is it that people make comments like they do. Makes me wonder are people really like this.Even in death a person is still not free. And these are adults making comments like these. Maybe if he was in the projects and this happened no one would mind. A daycare really?

My thought is this, improper training gets people killed every day in our walk in this realm. I do not know all the circumstances involved, so will refrain from further comments.
